Really. So one terrible remark she made to Jon while being in a state of depression after Bran's near-death makes her a bad person. Every single one of her other good qualities is negated by that one moment of her life.

Your black-and-white view of the world and the people in it must make your life pretty miserable. According to your logic, literally everyone on the planet is a bad person because newsflash: we've ALL done shitty things.

/DA

I have a feeling that it wasn't the only time Cat said something hurtful to Jon, since he's already got quite the complex about his bastard-hood by the beginning of GoT. If she has issues with his parentage, she should take it up with Ned; Jon had no say in who his parents were.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
the bastard complex might not be about Cat. sure she probably wasn't GREAT to him but I hardly think she was AWFUL. but the "bastard" thing is a HUGE social problem in this universe and he'd have a complex no matter what Cat did or how well she treated him. so she can't have all the blame put on HER for that. and honestly, how is she supposed to feel here? why does she have to be perfectly wonderful and understanding and never let it slip how incredibly painful him being around is? i'm not saying her attitude is GOOD, but it damn sure gets more flack than it deserves

If you believe this fan correspondence with GRRM then, yeah, it was the only time she said somethinglike that to Jon.

Jon's complex about being a bastard goes far deeper than Catelyn's treatment of him and has more to do with a bastard's place in society than anything else. Like he doesn't go the Wall to escape Catelyn. He goes to the Wall because he sees it as a place where a bastard can get honor and glory and rise above his birth.

Interesting. Good to know!

(Anonymous) 2013-05-01 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Hrm, haven't seen that before - and it is certainly interesting given the crap that the show made Catelyn spout.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You having a feeling isn't the same thing as it actually happening. For all intents and purposes, as far as canon is concerned, the one time she said that to Jon is the ONLY time anything like that happened (and I believe GRRM himself stated that it was unusual for her).

Since when it ok to be abusive to children because you're depressed? I don't think the anon above was trying to say she was a terrible person, period, just that she "should have kept that shit-bomb to herself" and uh, I concur

And I like Catelyn, and dislike Jon Snow as a character (I don't hate him as a person or anything, I just think he's boring, like most "good" characters)

Geez, imagine if you were a half-sibling living in a household with your non-biological mother and she said something like that to you, Jesus Christ

(Anonymous) 2013-05-01 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
imagine if you were a woman forced to take care of the living proof that your husband blatantly cheating on you and you have no say in the matter and can't just up and leave.

and "abusive to children"? lolno. in the show at least Jon is a fucking adult. Cat treated him pretty damn well all things considering, and it's canon that she only ever said that ONE awful thing to him. the worst she did was treat the others better (and he was a bastard so it's not like he expected to be in the same category as the legitimate children anyway)

too many people are trying to connect this to real life. it's not. in the context of this world, she did the best she coudl and she WAS NOT FUCKING ABUSIVE. Jon turned out FINE and for a bastard had a DAMN good spot in life.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-01 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
lolno. in the show at least Jon is a fucking adult

Well, he's not in the book, he's like... what, 14? 15? I forget.

I like Catelyn Stark but I don't feel like I need to excuse her crappy behavior just because I like the character. That's stupid. She's still basically a good person and YEAH I KNOW OK she fucked up telling Jon Snow she wished he'd died instead and YEAH I KNOW OK that her situation having to live with her (supposed) proof of her husband's infidelity (her husband she didn't even love when they married even) is crappy -- BUT THAT ALSO DOESN'T EXCUSE WHAT SHE DID.

Nothing really excuses what she did

And I guess I connect it to real life because I remember the things my parents did and said out of anger that they "didn't mean" and even if I sympathize with them and understand WHY they snapped and did/said these things, it still hurts. I would put Cat's "I wish you were dead" almost on par with my mom's "you're emotionally retarded" and she only said that to me once. That has stayed with me my entire life and that's pretty typical of a lot of childhood memories people have, it only has to happen once to be traumatic

(Anonymous) 2013-05-01 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I should also clarify that the abusive behavior (and yeah saying "I wish you were dead" to someone is emotionally abusive no matter how fucking old they are, especially a family member and Jon is a family member even though Cat doesn't like it) doesn't necessarily make a person an "abusive person"

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
lol ok

i was a very emotionally abusive 7 yr old cuz i said that to like EVERYONE i ever got in a spat with. "i hate you!!!" "i wish you were DEAD!!!!!" "why won't you just DIE, mum/dad/brother/best friend?!" "you were a horrible mistake and no one wanted you, dear sibling that i am older than!!" "i wish you were never BORN, sister/bro/bff!!!"

is it nice??

hell no.

is it out of line??

hell yes.

is it emotionally ABUSIVE?

lol no.

it's a one time overreaction. if cat was doing that on a normal basis, maybe i'd see your point. but she was not. as an adult, do i say the same sort of thing? no. but i've also never lost a child (or thought i was about to) nor have i had to deal with what cat had at that moment.

By your logic, Home Alone should be a study in emotional abuse. Kevin McAllister says he wishes his whole family would just disappear. AKA DIE. And his mother calls him on it, "I bet you'd be pretty sad if you woke up tomorrow and everyone was gone." "No, I wouldn't!!"

Followed up by the gleeful conclusion, "I made my family disappear!" *big grin*

Of course, we all know he was sad about it when he realised what that truly meant, but in the heat of the moment, Kevin McAllister was an emotionally abusive child towards his entire family.

Wow. That gives a whole new meaning to my favourite Christmas film.

No one is saying that what she said to Jon was okay. We're saying that ONE MISTAKE DOESN'T MAKE HER A BAD PERSON. Which you seem to understand just fine, but others clearly don't.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-01 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I never said she was a bad person Jesus

You can even be an abusive person and not be a bad person in my opinion, I think most abusive people don't even realize they're being abusive
