The person to blame in this situation is Ned. Not Cat. Not Jon. Ned put Jon in Catelyn's orbit. Ned chose to bring Jon home and raise him alongside his legitimate children in a world where that just DID NOT HAPPEN. Catelyn didn't have a choice in the matter. She had this child forced into her life while she was still trying to establish her own family and her marriage had barely gotten off the ground.

Ned could've made the situation slightly less awkward by telling Cat the truth about Jon's parentage. (Whatever that truth may be. I'm of the opinion Jon might be Benjen's, but we really don't know.) Ned probably had his reasons for keeping that from Catelyn and Jon and the rest of the world but it certainly didn't make things easier for Cat. She had to live with this question mark about Jon's mother and if Ned loved this other woman. That's not an easy situation in the best of times, let alone when your marriage is brand new and your husband is a virtual stranger you were forced to marry for political reasons.

So if you want to point fingers and blame someone for the strained relationship between Jon and Catelyn, blame the person who put them in that situation.

+1

THANKYOU.

Cat is a complex character. She has her faults. Her resentment towards Jon is when she is unlikable, no matter how much Ned is at fault. But that does not make her any less a really well written good character, and an admirable woman over all.

I think it's completely and utterly ridiculous to stan for her like this. Yeah, Ned is largely at fault here, but, you know, Cat was still terrible to Jon. She could have been better, but, hey it was her character flaw. People are allowed to dislike her for that. It doesn't make her any less than a strong woman overall.

I didn't know I was stanning? I realize that Cat has her flaws. Her flaws are what makes her such a complex character and one of the main reasons I care about her. I'm in no way excusing her treatment of Jon. Cat wasn't good to Jon but her reasons for resenting him and not wanting him around make sense to me. Cat being kind of cold and distant with Jon doesn't make her a bad person.

My point in blaming Ned is that everyone tends to overlook that Cat had no control over the situation. Ned brought Jon into their lives and Cat couldn't do a single thing about it. So being forced to raise this child, to see this child every single day...that was on Ned for putting Cat in that position. Everyone is so quick to fault Cat for not treating Jon well (which, yeah, she didn't) but they tend to forget that Cat would've had no involvement in Jon's life had Ned not brought him home in the first place.

Then Cat's anger should have been against Ned, not Jon. And yeah, I find her unlikable when she refuses to grow up and take control in that one small corner where she can instead of being shitty to the child who is guilty of even existing and taking a corner in her little world. She's a strong woman, she could have done that. But she doesn't even try. If she tried, even if she failed, I would greatly credit her.

She may have had no control over the situation, but neither did Jon. That seems to be overlooked a lot in these discussions.

If people don't like Cat for that, so what? I like her, I like her a lot- hell I like her more than I like Jon, but it doesn't bother me that people don't like her or feel comfortable with her because it did make me uncomfortable when she was so terrible to Jon.
mfirefly10: (GoT - Margaery Tyrell is flawless)

I don't care if people don't like Cat, for whatever reason. I care that people use her treatment of Jon as 'proof' that she's a bad person or a bad mother.

And of course Jon had no control. No one can control who their parents are and bb!Jon certainly couldn't control where or how he was raised.

Yet when people talk about their relationship, it's always Cat's fault. Never Ned's. This was an extremely complicated situation and people rarely acknowledge that in favor of bashing Catelyn for how she treated Jon.
