I think they were deliberately going for an incongruity between the glove and Leeloo's eventual form - the shock of both the in-universe audience and the RL audience seems like it was part of the point. Whatever they/we were expecting, some warrior being or whatever, it wasn't this pint-sized, orange-haired bundle of violence and innocence.

That said, it might have been cool if she was a little more alien, yeah.

I love this movie, though. Gary Oldman was having way too much fun, everyone was snarking in every direction, and the scene on the station, the Diva kicking ass vocally overlaid over Leeloo kicking ass physically, is one of my favourite scenes in anything ever.
