I haven't watched the show (don't even know what it is) but there's always the possibility that it just isn't any good. I mean, all of that stuff is great stuff but not worth much if it's in a shitty show.

This is more of a general thing and not even really specifically about this show I guess.

I'm gonna argue with you on that one, quality does not necessarily have anything to do whether the show is popular with fandom or not. I mean Teen Wolf if no Shakespeare by a long shot and it has a massive fandom. The fact that the show has all the things that fandom allegedly wants should overcome any bits of bad writing. I feel the OP has a point there.

I think quality is important, it's just that the kind of quality that is important for fandom is not necessarily the same as what a single observer would identify as quality, if you follow my drift. My point is that it's not necessarily "doesn't have hot boys kissing" so much as, maybe, that it doesn't have the necessary kinds of entertainment and quality that fandom finds interesting enough to watch. It doesn't mean it's bad - like you say, there's plenty of great works of art that don't have a fandom (even some that do have boys kissing). I'm just saying it's not necessarily unpopular solely because it lacks boys kissing.

And again, I haven't seen this! So it may be quite good, I don't know, I'm just saying in general.

I don't know, when a fandom pops up around a swimming anime's PV, I think "hot boys we can ship" is a HUGE factor for popularity.

I agree it's a variable, and a significant variable

I don't agree that it's the only variable. not a one size fits all explanation

Yeah, how many times have we seen secrets about people saying they know the show they're watching is terrible, but the fandom is awesome and that they love shipping the characters... who almost always turn out to be two white dudes. Apparently writing quality only matters if the characters aren't said white slashable skinny boys.

OP anon here; the show's called Huge, and while some folks will say the writing was awful (I like to imagine it's the same folks who say they leave Foreman out of their House fic because he's too unlikable) I found it to have multiple moments in its brief run that made me cheer, laugh, and choke up. I swear to god, there's a scene with Gina Torres and an email that made my breath catch in my throat. A freakin' EMAIL.

I've been to fat camp, and this show was everything that I hated about fat camp which in turn made me hate the show. Also, I prefer my fandom experience far, far away from real life. I guess I'm not alone in that, though.

Isn't it a sign of the same thing you describe fandom people to do, thouh, when the single most memorable scene to you is about Gina Torres, who is arguably the most 'normal' / non-fat and good looking person on this thing?

pssss, do you know where can I watch it? It sounds pretty interesting, I'm living on the different continent and there's 0% chance any of my country's TV chanells will ever buy this series and netfix... well, doesn't work here.
