Haven't seen the show (and therefore can't confirm if it's good), but I wouldn't be surprised. I mean, it's not like attractive guys who might kiss (preferably kinda lanky and more gaunt than square-jawed) doesn't absolutely dominate fandom circles.

I haven't watched the show (don't even know what it is) but there's always the possibility that it just isn't any good. I mean, all of that stuff is great stuff but not worth much if it's in a shitty show.

This is more of a general thing and not even really specifically about this show I guess.

Haven't seen the show (been considering watching it though), but I think you're pretty spot-on with those lists, have to admit. Fandom pretty much ignores the women and POC led shows that do exist for the most part. Also plus sized characters, both male or female.

Speaking of, ANY GOOD RECS FOR SHOWS LIKE THAT? It doesn't have to have all of those components. Even just one is fine. Outside what OP mentioned, of course. Movies also welcome.

Fat camp is not a relatable problem for most people, not even most fat people. Do you have any shows about fat people who have normal people problems, instead of shows about fat that happens to be attached to people?

Yes that show had all of the above, but it was pretty sub-par. I appreciated the effort but overall the acting and writing just wasn't very good.

Do fandom based series generally develop around mundane soap-esque shows? Or at least in the sense you seem to be discussing it.

Throw in some werewolves or sociopath eccentric detectives for a proper comparison.

I think the initial problem is I've never heard of it, or seen pics from it.

That makes me, you know, less likely to watch.

Also there are some genres I just dislike, regardless of characters.

I don't know. I can't say for sure because I haven't polled the fandom.

But what does it matter? If that's what people want to see, that's what they watch. I just don't understand the constant preoccupation with so many people with what other people are doing in their free time.

I have no idea what 'fandom' wants in a show. Things I want in a show: sci-fi, fantasy or crime as genres. Intense friendships, ensemble casts, plots that explore multiple aspects of the issues they raise, ladies kicking ass (physically or politically or psychologically), teased non-standard relationships that then actually go somewhere, love, death and sacrifice.

Things I've never particularly liked in a show: reality tv, sitcoms or romcoms as genres. 'Special episodes'. One-sided presentation of issues. Sloppy writing and/or discontinuity. Hyper-angsty male lead characters.

I don't know what this show is, or which one of my lists it would fit on. But 'fandom', as an imagined monolithic entity, can seriously go fuck itself sideways. I have my preferences. They do not, to my knowledge, hurt anyone. So I'm going to watch what I want to watch, thanks.

I'm sorry your show didn't get the attention you feel it deserves. But I've never even heard of it, and depending on where it falls on my own personal preference lists, I may or may not want to watch it myself, and I'm not particularly going to feel guilty about that.

Has it ever occurred to you that it might be different parts of fandom that want these different things? Like, maybe the part of fandom that says they want more representation and the part of fandom that really wants pretty white boys don't overlap as much as you think. (I'm sure there is some overlap, but I'm equally sure that they don't completely overlap.)

I think part of the problem is that fandom truly does want these things in a show, but when it comes to down to it, it takes a lot longer than that to change ingrained preferences and behavior.

Moreso when you've been participating in something that has this huge sexual element that has solidified your want for a specific 'type'. Unlearning is not easy, and ideals aren't always as glamorous as reality makes them sound.

Although I think a lot of people also do enjoy shows with character diversity, but just don't create a lot of fanwork for it.

Ehh, give me those things in a scifi or fantasy show and I'll give it a try. When I want to watch realistic scenarios, I'd prefer to watch nonfiction.

The hell of it is, OP, people want what they want.

Even the most sanctimonious fandom crusader, at the end of the day, can't help what turns their narrative crank. And it doesn't matter if a show ticks all the right ticky boxes, if it's not doing the particular thing that gets them going, they're not going to get fannish about it.

I'm not saying you shouldn't be frustrated. Frankly, I feel very much the same way as you do, if not moreso. But ever it were thus, and thus it shall certainly continue to be.

Imagine if you hated superhero movies. Imagine how fucked you'd be then.

I think if all of those actors/characters/traits had been on a show with a completely different premise and plot, I would have gone to the trouble of seeking it out. Make them fight aliens or something. Make them wizards. I'm not interested in a show about fat camp. That's seriously not the only way to make a show starring fat people, networks.

I could not stand the main character. The acting and the character itself, I just could not stand it. It really soured the entire show for me.

Plus, fat camp. It's just...ugh.

That being said, I do wish the show had had more support at the time and that the network had given it a fair chance. It definitely was a positive and fresh change from all the other shows out there.

If you want more people to know about this show, maybe its title should be included in the secret. It doesn't look like something I would watch because everyone in the picture looks happy.

I can't speak for fandom, but I would like a show with strong, complex female characters, dudes who might make out with each other, and giant robots.

Fandom only cares about those things if the show is sff or crime procedural (or occasionally period drama).

I understand wanting a fandom around something that seems like it should be everything the fandom is asking for. I get that! As people are saying though, no one seems to have heard of this show, which makes it hard to go all-out on the fanwork. And a lot of the fandoms that seem to have MEGA fanbases (Sherlock, Supernatural, Doctor Who, Harry Potter, etc) aren't in the same genre as this show. Genre is a HUGE predictor of the popularity of a show within certain demographics.

Another problem is that fandom popularity is not necessarily the same as general popularity. So even if fandom is all over some new show, it may still get canceled after a season because the viewership isn't high enough. Fandom seems absolutely huge, but the majority of TV viewers are NOT members of fandom. For every person who rushes to read or write fic/meta/make art/gif their feels/etc. there are probably a hundred who don't really think much about the show until the next time it airs. If THOSE numbers aren't there, it doesn't really matter if there's a thriving fandom.

And as people have said, there are also different circles of fandom. The "I like pretty boys that might kiss" section is not always the same as the "more diversity in terms of gender, race, and appearance" section. There's some overlap, but it's not 100%.
