How exactly does "you're so fat you have to go to fat camp, fatty" = body positivity?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
because making fatties loose weight is 'good for us' or some bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you one of those HAES people? Because that is real bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't even know what that means. But shaming people and telling them "I only care about your health' when you really don't is shitty. And that's what fat camp is. It's shaming kids and making them feel shitty and teaching them shitty yo-yo diets that will make their weight problems worse. Instead of dealing with the under lining issues be they physical or mental.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
HAES = Healthy At Every Size, I believe.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well...I mean...it literally is.

I'm sure you don't mean that getting to a healthy weight isn't good for you, though. I presume you're talking about people jettisoning into your conversation to tell you how much weight you ought to be losing as if it's any of their business and such.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Not the person you're replying to, but define "healthy weight." I have a fat friend in far better shape than a number of skinnier people I know.

Skinny doesn't mean healthy and "healthy weight" can vary from person to person. Hence there isn't an exact definition and most people who talk about healthy weight (instead of believing non-skinny means non-healthy) know that.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
It is quite possible to be fat and healthy. While your weight *may* cause some healthy issues, its not actually as many as people think.

Even professionals can't agree on what a healthy weight range is - they recently moved the healthy weight BMI range *arbitrarily*.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Also, fuck mental health. Getting to a "healthy weight" by whatever means is good for fatties. Yay.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
If you had watched even the first episode of the show, you would have an answer to your question. As it is, your opinion will not be needed.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty hard to watch a show you've never heard of. Which is why I asked the question, for those 2 people who actually had. So you could answer. That's how discussion works.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
What the previous rude anon is saying is that the show is REALLY about learning to love your body/self. It's set in a fat camp because that is an obvious source of conflict in the battle for body positivity.

That doesn't mean that the show was effective at that purpose.

Huge isn't about "your body sucks, so change it, no matter what that means for your health" fat camp.

It's about "let's put you in a structured environment that involves a good diet and reasonable exercise, and let's encourage you to feel good and accepting about your bodies and to not have an anxious or self-destructive relationship to them, and let's also make sure you have plenty of opportunity to experience teenage things like LARPing and movie nights and relationship drama with peers who will relate to you as a normal human being, rather than as The Fat One" fat camp.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
If they'd mentioned the LARPing I'd have been more willing to check this out in further detail. That's the first bit of premise that's come up here that sounds like something I might actually be interested in watching.
