Haven't seen the show (been considering watching it though), but I think you're pretty spot-on with those lists, have to admit. Fandom pretty much ignores the women and POC led shows that do exist for the most part. Also plus sized characters, both male or female.

Speaking of, ANY GOOD RECS FOR SHOWS LIKE THAT? It doesn't have to have all of those components. Even just one is fine. Outside what OP mentioned, of course. Movies also welcome.

DA

Oh yesss, The Closer is my jam; and it lasted 7 seasons!

Winners and Losers was okay, at least the first season. I stopped watching it after that because IIRC they were making it too needlessly dramatic.

Off the top of my head, stuff I've seen recently with complex female characters:

Person of Interest
Elementary
Orphan Black
Beauty and the Beast

Older stuff:
Missing (the Lifetime show. ABC's was all right, too)
Farscape
Torchwood (not that complex = good. I'm aware my tolerance for ridiculousness is high, in this regard)
Babylon Five
Leverage
The Pretender
Spooks (MI-5)

Some stuff that hovers on the flat, but entertaining scale:
Doctor Who (I grew up with it, hard to let it go)
Eureka
Haven
Stargates SG-1 and Atlantis
Covert Affairs
St. Trinian's movies (the originals are... less entertaining, even though one of them has an AMAZING twenty-minute train chase scene)

Oooh, totally seconding Orphan Black and Elementary.

Beauty and the Beast is (imho) only good if you can get over the ridiculousness of the 'Beast' only having that teensy tiny scar, and if you didn't grow up loving the original.

also, you just made me sad because Leverage hasn't been cancelled long enough to be considered older, right?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen a lot of these. From the ones I have, I'm seconding POI (for Root, Carter and Shaw, mostly), Babylon Five (Ivanova, Delenn, Timov, Talia), Leverage (Parker, I love Parker, the quirky, socially inept, genius thief is a woman, I love it), The Pretender (another Parker, this one the relentless, flawed, damaged hunter with the tragic past), Doctor Who (hit and miss depending on era, but a lot of Three's cast, Four's cast, Five's cast, Seven's cast and Ten's cast are awesome ladies, and there are one-off character from most eras who are awesome), Haven (mostly Audrey, but complex, yes, you could definitely say that) and St Trinians (which is a lot of stereotypical school girls in a very un-stereotypical plot, and a lot of fun).

Oh, yes, Elementary! You have a badass woman of color whose storyline is not based on the fact that she's a woman or colored; a badass trans woman whose storyline is not based on the fact that she's a woman or trans; and most importantly you have a freaking adorable tortoise. Everyone should watch this show!

Mrs Hudson was such a lovely surprise, wasn't she?

And ugh, my love for Joan knows no bounds.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, I think I'm finally sold.
Will start watching this show tonight =)

Slightly stealing this thread a little, but in terms of POC led shows, I've recently starting looking at "The Wire". And, see, I really really want to watch this, because I've met Lester Freamon and he's pretty much my favourite type of character ever, but I'm slightly worried that this will be one of those shows where literally nobody makes it out even half-way okay.

Just ... does anybody know if it's worth it? I'm getting the impression that it's gonna shred my heart and possibly terminally depress me. But I might be willing to go with that if people like Lester and Kima and Daniels are awesome.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
First season was a little slow for me, tbqh. But it's got well written characters and interesting storylines. It's definitely on the nitty-gritty, reality can crush your heart side of tv drama, though.

And I couldn't marathon it, which is unusual for me. I think getting through the whole show took me like three months?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
So ... take it in small doses, maybe? Watch it alongside something lighter?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I mean, I would at least try it and see if you like it. It's definitely worth sticking out the entirety of it.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
It's not really the kind of show you marathon, imo (although I loved season 1 and watched it all in one weekend). There is so much to process.

I watched it recently for the first time. Thought season 1 was a bit dull, loved seasons 2, 3, and especially 4 (one of the most brilliant things to air on TV), 5 was a bit of a let-down. It's definitely worth it, but depressing as anything.

If you like it, and particularly Lester, I highly recommend Treme. Lots of the same actors, including that guy (playing a kind of similar character but with drastically different life experiences and ZOMG he's one of my favourite TV characters ever). It's also by David Simon and Eric Overmyer and also looks at the life and ecology of a city, in this case New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Largely POC cast, way more gender-balanced than The Wire. It has its bleak moments, given the subject matter, but I found it much more uplifting. The show hasn't ended yet, so I don't know whether anyone makes it out okay, but I imagine at least some of the characters do given the overall vibe.

Oh, and the best soundtrack of any show, ever. It's worth watching it just for that.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. Okay, I think I'll put both of those on my 'try it and see' lists. Thank you!

And have patience. I watched S1 of The Wire years ago and in addition to not finding it exciting/substantially different than other police procedurals, I also found it pretty triggering. I returned to the show after years of friends nagging me to see it, and it was well worth it.

(Treme had me at hello, but that's also because the subject matter is more interesting to me.)

Enjoy!

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
The Wire is the best show ever made, but it's definitely going to rip your heart out at least once per season (and in almost every single episode of season 4).

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Getting that impression, yeah. Mind you, I've rolled with depressing before (usually in SF) if the characters are worth it. I just usually have to psych myself up some if I know in advance it's going to crush my heart.

Oh boy, it's so worth it! And it's not all doom and gloom. It's pretty dark and gritty and a lot of likeable characters bite the dust, but that makes the times where it turns out okay for someone even more satisfying. Lester and Kima and Daniels remain awesome throughout, and season three introduces another character in the same category of awesome.

I don't find it a depressing show. But it does a really great job showing why and how the system is broken.

(I thought season two is a bit slower and less engaging than the others, though still good. Seaon 4 is my favorite, I think it's all-around flawless.)

Beyond being worth it because it's totally incredible, I actually don't think The Wire is one of the most shred your heart out shows out there overall, and it is certainly not a show where nobody makes it out even half-way okay.

Are there specific storylines and characters that will destroy you? Oh fuck yes. Don't get me wrong, some of the saddest character fates I've ever seen are on this show. And yes, the overall message will leave you cynical about the possibly of the necessary fundamental changes ever happening.

But it's NOT grimdark. It's NOT gloom and doom for the sake of gloom and doom. It certainly does NOT go out of its way to hurt your favorite characters unless they are in positions to be hurt (ie. people involved in the crime world are more at risk than the cops, who are more at risk than the politicians, etc.)

The Wire strives for realism, and in real life bad things happen, but good things do, too. People die, people get addicted to drugs, people suffer, people throw their lives away. But people also live (most cops aren't killed on the job for instance). People fall in love. People recover from pain and heartbreak and addiction. People manage to get out of terrible situations and make something of themselves.

I'm from Baltimore, and I think the show is clearly a love note to the city. I wouldn't say that if its fundamental message were depressing, or if it suggested no one who lives in the city can have a happy life.

Bomb Girls, Bomb Girls, Bomb Girls. Oh man. It's a Canadian show about women working in a munitions factory in WWII and, unfortunately, it's just been cancelled. Admittedly, the show falters with PoCs--there are only really two or three who are given notable screentime and none of them get solid storylines, but it's a show almost entirely made up of women, including canonical lesbians, who get shit done and have complex emotional arcs and are independent and amazing and their perfect faces I can't even. A "downside," if you can call it that, is that only one of the dude characters is consistently likable/well-rounded, but I am more than willing to sacrifice that for a cast of amazingly wonderful ladies.

While this show doesn't fit the list you asked, Getting On is exceptional in the sense that it's slightly exaggerated, realistic comedy. Jo Brand is a legend, the entire cast is incredible, and it helps that she used to be a nurse before writing a comedy about life in the NHS.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Switched at Birth. It has deaf main characters, Latino main characters, black and gay supporting characters (none of whom are stereotypical) and the lead characters are teen girls who are allowed to make their own choices, including sexual choices, without being slut-shamed or virgin-shamed. Also the writing KICKS ASS.

Go watch it.
