Suspension of disbelief crushed. The people who'd hunt superhuman creatures would presumably have to be in shape themselves. Not to mention the athletic demands of the roll.

Unless you wanna get some techy hunter in the mix, but even then, rules of drama demand high physical activity. Running to save somebody, etc.

Though it we watched a character actually get in shape as the show progressed, that'd be all kidsa awesome.

If rolls had athletic demands, nobody would get fat in the first place.

There's a very wide range of body types that you can wind up having and still be in excellent shape. I recommend watching some roller derby in case you require evidence of this.

I'm aware of the existence of different body types. But since most stunt people are not small, the demands of a large person in an action role would be significant (look I spelled it right!) or the stunt outfit would have to be very well done.

I think we'd see that person change shape naturally. Which again, would be a fascinatingly realistic touch (being thrust into a significantly more physical lifestyle would tend to do that to people)

I used to run with some pretty hefty big bellied guys who knocked out a 5 mile run before breakfast every morning. You would think they were out of shape from looking at them, but they weren't. They could change their body type only so much with exercise, but they kept active from getting bigger.

Roller derby demon hunting, preferably with a fat rockabilly chick lead. I would watch the everloving hell out of it.

Sammo Hung as a demon hunter.

"Big" guy who's probably in better shape than anybody here.

In fairness, there's a huge difference between someone both muscular and fat and the average fat person.

Oo I remember Martial Law. Loved it as a kid and I liked it how he wasn't your typical "ninja" :D

Why not a Nero Wolfe-style monster hunter, ie they're brilliant at the research and analysis and have others do the legwork?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
How would it require any more suspension of disbelief than tiny waifish girls who can knock a dude/robot assassin/monster across a good-sized room with one kick? You can get away with a hell of a lot if you can manage to make it cool enough.
likeadeuce: (buffysurvive)

[personal profile] likeadeuce 2013-05-03 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
OK, but there's also suspension of disbelief involved in a tiny tiny girl having super strength the way Buffy does. Superpowers can't break the laws of physics. She just doesn't have enough body mass to do a lot of the things we see on screen. If realism was really involved, then girls in demon fighter shows would be built more like female athletes than the tiny, super-skinny builds they seem to have.

(I'm not slagging on tiny girls in fantasy shows. It's just that we let this lack of realism go when it dovetails with TV beauty standards).

Superpowers can't break the laws of physics.

I think you misunderstand the "super" in superpowers.

This is a thing I have with Homestuck fandom. As a fat person I don't think it's offensive to not draw any of the Alternian trolls as fat, because I don't think the Alternian lifestyle of constantly running for their lives and hunting their own food would allow them to get all that fat (with the possible exception of Gamzee who appears to live on pie and soda). The Beforans and the humans, however, yeah, it's nice to see some of them drawn more well-padded.

Gamzee can move faster then most people can track with their eyes. That suggests he's rather in shape.

It's definitely my headcanon that Aranea is a lot thicker then Vriska though.

You've...never been in a physical altercation with a fat person, have you?

Twice. First was in 5th grade. They ended up pushed into a locker, fell, fractured arm landing. This was after they punched me several times so I didn't feel very bad about it.

the other time was in high school, I got hit so hard by a kick to my chin my feet left the ground and I blacked out for a second by a guy who probably could have been a linebacker (it was sparring in martial arts class so thankfully that was the fight ending)

The thing is though, while he was a big guy with some fat on him, nobody would mistake his football build for somebody with a similar proportion but out of shape. It'd be entirely believable that a big strong guy could be an action hero. But strongfat and fat are quite different looking in motion. The latter jiggles.

I see this argument from time to time, but I still think it's weird that our conception of "fit" is the kind that can be attained through highly specific exercise routines that actors do for the sake of *looking* a certain way. A lot of times, functional muscle isn't that big, puffed up looking muscle that a lot of actors get, either. For example, men mostly only get nice-looking pecs because they specifically seek to acquire nice-looking pecs, not because the exercise needed actually serves a purpose. It's a pretty huge stretch for me to believe a man actively on the run, who presumably spends some free time working out to stay healthy/fit, would look more like, say, Jared Padalecki than Kevin James.

[personal profile] darkmanifest 2013-05-03 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've noticed that serious athletes tend to have a lot less romanticized builds than most pin-up muscle models, though now and then you get people who can balance (popular) aesthetics with function.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'm rolling my eyes at you because, yeah, past a certain point larger people aren't going to be able move as well - but that point is higher than you'd think. I know a lot of fat distance runners and a lot of fat sprinters (and yeah, they aren't up there with professional athelets, but the characters running speed often aren't actually *that* fast - usually on the fast end of normal - nothing special enough to get a mention).

Also, the rules of drama DON'T actually require that every character run. Usually there are a few characters that don't run much (often the woman in very high heels - and if you believe that she can ~obviously~ run fast enough to save everyone's life, but a fat person couldn't ~possible~ be fast enough your an idiot.)

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-05-03 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I said a above, but in my experience, strongfat and fat move very differently. One jiggles a lot more.

That said, I believe high heels are horrible things that no woman (or man for that matter) should ever wear. Yes, they make your legs look nice, not denying that. They also fuck up your feet and ankles far more then that'll every be worth. They were invented for horse-riding. We drive cars now, you don't need to hook into stirrups for those.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well, now, maybe obese people wouldn't be hunters, but if you ever met/saw any actual bounty hunters, you'd see all kinds of different body types and I could see any of them going after supernatural baddies. Skinny doesn't always mean athletic.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
Actually that made me think. Just like monster hunter show, normal detective show needs an active lead but there is also detectives like Miss Marple and Poirot. So could we have something similar here? I want an small old lady who kicks ass because she has survived this long and knows almost everything about monster including all their weak spots and how the protect herself without using muscle.

If there already is show like that, please tell me. I just realised I need this!

But back to the main topic, similarly I can think ways that fat people can use to hunt supernatural. It would also be something that makes the show different from all other action packed series. I don't know if anyone else want to see something like that but I do.
