Fandom only cares about those things if the show is sff or crime procedural (or occasionally period drama).

I think it's more that fandom mostly cares about genre shows, full stop. Off the top of my head, most major fandoms I've seen have been SFF, crime, espionage, etc.

A lot of people want representation within those genres, because those genres are full of people who get to do cool things, and it's always nice when the person who's like you is out there in the universe fighting evil and exploring strange new worlds and running daring heists and hunting down bad people and just generally being cool. It's escapism and representation all in one, and why settle for half when you can have the whole?
