I wish they would ban whoever uploads 157 WIP posts of miniscule, <300 word ficlets. Tumblr strikes again.

god yes

What's with people blaming Tumblr for things that have always existed?

I remember a time BT (Before Tumblr) where drabbles were all the rage (at least where I hung out) - I guess they're back in style again?

Been in fandom since...'97 I think, and I still remember there were short fic even then. I avoided them, but they were there.

DA

They were there but don't you think they've multiplied since then? I've been in fandom about the same length as you and I remember these tiny fic being the exception, now they seem to be the rule.

I think "drabbles" might have multiplied. And I think drabble has become more synonymous with "I'm going to shit out some words in my mind" since then, as I remember a lot of shorter stories being better in quality. But it should be noted I was only in a few fandoms then, and didn't really go to any multi-fandom archives. And there's also just more of everything.

There were other things back then - I seem to remember this vast amount of songfic that seems to have been tuned down somewhat, fortunately.

Oh, goodness! All those songfics to "My Immortal"!

Or basically just one hit wonders that were popular for like 3 weeks, but had fic made about them. Often with really cliche lyrics.

It took me way too long to remember that My Immortal was an actual song, not just a...whatever the hell it was.

I actually LIKE the song, which is why I avoided those songfics as the plague.

In my fandoms the average fic length has shrunk dramatically over the last 2 years. Declining attention span, maybe? (I blame tumblr.)

OTOH, while I'm not a big fan of crap drabbles, or crap longfic for that matter, there are some authors whose carefully crafted drabbles are among the best fics I've ever read, period. Sometimes the discipline of being limited to 100 words results in something beautiful.

Declining attention span, maybe?

desire for attention and instant gratification, more like.

vomit out 200 words of 'genius', everyone thinks you hung the moon, instant gratification...profit!

Drabbles have been around forever though.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
They don't have the structure of drabbles. They're just piddly little low quality posts.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
This is one of those "stay of my lawn" things, isn't it?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Those have always been around too. Some authors stictly stick to the meaning of drabble, others just assume it's a short fic; the debate over this has been eternal.

Those have been around for forever too.

Oh my god, yes. There are a couple of smaller fandoms that have had their Ao3 sections ruined by tumblr authors reposting everything.

I will speak up in defense of the drabble (as classically defined: 100 words exactly). I think it *can be* a very useful exercise in brevity, and in my reading and writing experience has resulted in some very powerful fic. I do concede that posting single drabble after drabble to either one's journal or to AO3 or other communities can get very annoying for readers. As a writer, I prefer posting drabble sets (usually of five or ten) that focus on a common theme myself, and as a reader, I prefer when drabble or ficlet authors post them together rather than separately.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
This.

I love drabbles, but I really love when authors put them all in one bin rather than having to wade through page after page of one author's drabbles when browsing.

We are in absolute agreement.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-04 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
you know you can filter those out on ao3 right?
