If you know what to look for, you should have no problem finding good fic. Even on that blackhole fanfiction.net.

I agree that there's a lot more badfic than there used to be, but there's still plenty of good stuff too.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what happens when more people posts fics. On the upside you have more fics.

Also you don't have the right to 'good' fics. Just an fyi.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, as soon as more people started to post fic in one of my fandoms, the overall quality dipped instantly. More variety, though, even if very little of it is my cup of tea.

AO3 is soooooo much easier and more functional and better looking and...

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely. I think it's a direct result of open registration they had a bit ago and a giant influx of ff.net and younger authors. Also ff.net and LJ changing rules or getting crappier has a lot of people looking for new places to post/host their fic. Sadly more people=lower overall quality.

I think as more and more fic gets added , there will be more bad stories, but also more good ones. This was the case with Fanfiction.net. There are good stories there too, you just need ro weed out more bad ones.

I wish they would ban whoever uploads 157 WIP posts of miniscule, <300 word ficlets. Tumblr strikes again.

Then obviously the answer is no: the quality hasn't plummeted, there's just a lot more to go through to find something you like. I still find a lot of good fic there without much trouble, and even a lot of stuff that's rough around the edges I've still enjoyed.
littletown: (Default)

[personal profile] littletown 2013-05-02 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That may be so, but I try to look on the bright side and think that everyone starts somewhere. I'm sure plenty of people posting on AO3 now will improve over time.

It's just fanfic. We're not entitled to quality writing.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there's the whole "more fic = more bad fic".

Also, it could be your tastes have become more specific so a fic you may have enjoyed had you come across it earlier doesn't appeal to you now.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
There has been a shocking increase in horrible "present tense" fics too. Who reads that crap?

Yes and no? It just means there's more folk in there. Embrace it, the community is getting biiiigggerrrr ♥

Or don't embrace it. Just level up those good fic-finding skills and keep up with the flow of not-so-good.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think if you want to post short fic, then that is your right. I do wish AO3 had an easy method of weeding out shorter fic though (personal preference).

However, what I have seen lately had really started to annoy me.

PEOPLE POSTING PROMPTS AS WORKS IN THE ARCHIVE.

As in, "not!fic". Just. Someone writing a few hundred words that are basically:

"OMG I had totally the best idea for a crossover and it would be x/y gets trapped in alternate dimension and then they have sex. OMGOMG someone PLEASE write this!"

You're not wrong about the quality drop. In the begining it use to be that fanfiction.net had all the shitty fics, LJ was the mixed bag & AO3 had all the good stuff. Nowadays though, I'm finding more & more shitty fics in AO3. It's probably due to writers migrating their work to the better site.

It's not just a drop in the quality of fics either. It seems the tagging system has gone to shit too because the youngins tag like it's Tumblr. I love Tumblr & all but I also love being able to find a specific kind of fic without reading the entire story in the tags.

Skyehawke! I remember discovering it circa 2004 or something. I was in... HP fandom, I think, and was pretty much stunned. It seemed like every fic on that site was good.

I post my fic to AO3, Skyehawke, FF.net, and Lunaescence. Everyone's already talking about AO3, so let me address Skyehawke.

That site is STILL invite-only. I was able to ask an IRL friend with an account to invite me, but many authors aren't so lucky. That alone keeps out your just-starting-to-fic fan, and cuts down on the chance for bad!fic.

Posting anything not HP at Skyehawke can be like shouting into the void. Avengers, Sherlock and other live-action fic earn some attention, but everything else, like manga, and game fandoms? You're almost invisible. I'm overjoyed when I see I've earned ONE hit on a fic mirrored there.

I wanted in to Skyehawke because I'd read a LOT of great HP fic there over the years, and the anime fics I tried were usually quite good, too. I wanted to play with the veterans! But in the end, the site just doesn't attract the (non-HP) traffic.

I'm still going to post there. I do like the site! And with the tiny collection of fics in the genres I write to, it makes my own easier to find. Can't argue with that. ^^

I'd certainly welcome more (non-HP) fic at Skyehawke. But as long as new accounts there are so difficult to obtain, it isn't going to happen.

I've noticed this in the Hobbit fandom...

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
(Posted this in the wrong thread first, sorry).

Gah, I know, right?

Someone above has commented on tons of miniscule WIP ficlets being posted. When I see freshly posted (as in, 2 or 3 days ago) ficlets that have 2000 hits already, I just know they've been linked to from the author's Tumblr. I think some people post them to AO3 just to see how many people actually read their fics! As a comparison, much better written fics, often with the same pairing, have only 500 hits after weeks of being posted because the author hasn't "pimped" them anywhere else.

I see this a lot in The Hobbit fandom, for instance, since this is my main fandom right now. Granted, certain classics with 50,000+ hits haven't been advertized on Tumblr by the fic writers themselves but their loyal fans who have a lot of Tumblr followers. It's true what they say, if your post gets noticed by the "right"/famous people, it will get a ton of likes and reblogs.

AO3 also has more Mary-Sue and self-insert fics now that the younger crowd from FF.net is posting there as well. It's delicious to see the AO3 version only have like 200 views after 20 long chapters of one of the brattiest, overly dramatic, hateful and most unlikable Mary-Sues to fall into Middle-Earth from our modern world, while the teenagers on FF.net flail over the same fic posted there and EAT THAT SHIT UP because they can relate to the awful Sue/wanna be her LMAO. Stuff like that really shows the difference between FF.net and AO3 when it comes to the target readership.

Man, it's LOTR fandom all over again! Not even dwarves are safe from Sues! Curse you, attractive Durin line.

If you'll forgive me one more rant: In general, I never understood how the young authors on FF.net believe any canon character could actually fall for the Sues' awful personalities and immaturity. The brattier and angrier the girls are, the more irresistible they seem to the love interest! The more they talk back and stomp their feet )like a stereotypical teenager), the higher their attractiveness. That's not what we call "being sassy", for Pete's sake, it's being a BRAT, and showing the author's age/maturity, too, IMO. Learn the difference! Show some respect to the canon characters and stop making everything revolve around you, Sue.

I hope the majority of Sues stays on FF.net and off AO3. For once, it's been refreshing not having to wade through all that on a daily basis just to get to the good stuff.

/rant
