Definitely. I think it's a direct result of open registration they had a bit ago and a giant influx of ff.net and younger authors. Also ff.net and LJ changing rules or getting crappier has a lot of people looking for new places to post/host their fic. Sadly more people=lower overall quality.

The younger author thing really hurts any community. I wish there was a credible way to restrict posting to over 18s. Children under that age really cannot write at all.

Because everyone becomes a wonderful author as soon as they turn 18 :D

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
That's silly. There are some thing children can't write as well as adults, I'll grant you that, but talent needs experience to go anywhere. :)

Bullshit

I can't right for crap myself (despite being in my 20s), but I'm constantly surprised by how young my favorite authors are - I actually end up feeling super old...

Wrote the 14 year old.

Yeah, you don't get magical talent at 18, but before that it is guaranteed you can't write for shit. Just don't have the experience before then. Too many brats from helicopter parents won't have much life experience after that either, but it is a starting point for most.

Not so easy. In my twenties I was being outwritten by a 13 yr old. Stung the ego something fierce! Clearly that's not all 13 year olds, but to say that under 18s can't write for shit is a fallacy.

DA

Wasn't bravecows only thirteen when she started writing her incredible Good Omens fic? It blew my mind when she mentioned her age years later; all that time I'd assumed she was older than I was, based on her writing skill, rather than over half a decade younger.

I can't right for crap myself

Apparently, you can't.

(despite being in my 20s)

Which I find highly dubious.

yeahh as someone way over 18, i know way way too many authors younger than me (and under 18) who i wish i could write as well as. age is not directly proportional to writing skill or talent.

Wrong-o, I was writing masterpieces at fifteen seaux.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. While I realize many kids are technically very good writers, they lack the life experience and emotional maturity to tackle the kind of things that make for good characterization.
