You're not wrong about the quality drop. In the begining it use to be that fanfiction.net had all the shitty fics, LJ was the mixed bag & AO3 had all the good stuff. Nowadays though, I'm finding more & more shitty fics in AO3. It's probably due to writers migrating their work to the better site.

It's not just a drop in the quality of fics either. It seems the tagging system has gone to shit too because the youngins tag like it's Tumblr. I love Tumblr & all but I also love being able to find a specific kind of fic without reading the entire story in the tags.

"in the beginning"?! AO3's only been around since 2008. Man, I feel ancient now.

That's a long time in internet years.

Yeah that's why I feel old, I've been posting fics since 2001 ;__;

Let me dig out my fanzines. If I can remember which box I put them in, they are probably pretty yellowed by now though.

If you are going to talk about internet old, at least reference Usenet.

There is a quick way to identify the real old hands of the internet. Ask them which month it is, if they say anything except September then they aren't really old internetters.

Today is Friday September the 7185th 1993.

Oh, man; I've been on since 1993 and haunted usenet (rasff was my first community) and I never realized that! *is ashamed*

There is always more shitty fic than good fic. That's just how it is with any fiction. No biggie.

...That said, an archive is useless if you can't search it properly.
