(Posted this in the wrong thread first, sorry).

Gah, I know, right?

Someone above has commented on tons of miniscule WIP ficlets being posted. When I see freshly posted (as in, 2 or 3 days ago) ficlets that have 2000 hits already, I just know they've been linked to from the author's Tumblr. I think some people post them to AO3 just to see how many people actually read their fics! As a comparison, much better written fics, often with the same pairing, have only 500 hits after weeks of being posted because the author hasn't "pimped" them anywhere else.

I see this a lot in The Hobbit fandom, for instance, since this is my main fandom right now. Granted, certain classics with 50,000+ hits haven't been advertized on Tumblr by the fic writers themselves but their loyal fans who have a lot of Tumblr followers. It's true what they say, if your post gets noticed by the "right"/famous people, it will get a ton of likes and reblogs.

AO3 also has more Mary-Sue and self-insert fics now that the younger crowd from FF.net is posting there as well. It's delicious to see the AO3 version only have like 200 views after 20 long chapters of one of the brattiest, overly dramatic, hateful and most unlikable Mary-Sues to fall into Middle-Earth from our modern world, while the teenagers on FF.net flail over the same fic posted there and EAT THAT SHIT UP because they can relate to the awful Sue/wanna be her LMAO. Stuff like that really shows the difference between FF.net and AO3 when it comes to the target readership.

Man, it's LOTR fandom all over again! Not even dwarves are safe from Sues! Curse you, attractive Durin line.

If you'll forgive me one more rant: In general, I never understood how the young authors on FF.net believe any canon character could actually fall for the Sues' awful personalities and immaturity. The brattier and angrier the girls are, the more irresistible they seem to the love interest! The more they talk back and stomp their feet )like a stereotypical teenager), the higher their attractiveness. That's not what we call "being sassy", for Pete's sake, it's being a BRAT, and showing the author's age/maturity, too, IMO. Learn the difference! Show some respect to the canon characters and stop making everything revolve around you, Sue.

I hope the majority of Sues stays on FF.net and off AO3. For once, it's been refreshing not having to wade through all that on a daily basis just to get to the good stuff.

I've noticed this too and the meaner parts of me delight in it. It's great seeing some novel-length 10th walker epic sit there with like 12 hits and no feedback.

the reason those Mary Sues are so awful is they're written by teenagers and teenagers are fucking assholes.

It's okay, most of them outgrow it in a decade or two.

I don't read Suefic, but that sentence just described 95% of all shoujo love interests.
