Out of curiosity, what would you consider to be a "non-asshole" serious reply to "I'm in love with a fictional character, who's also a terrible person?"

I would say "well, it's probably better than being in love with a real terrible person". It's not like he's going to jump out of the screen and hurt the OP.

Plus there are a plethora of reasons besides fear that someone would be content loving a fictional character. Making it sound like they're pathetic and the only reason they could POSSIBLY want that is because they're sorry cowards afraid of THE REAL WORLD is rude.

(I know OP didn't take offense to the comment, just providing a possible explanation. I can think of plenty of reasons I'd rather stay in love with a fictional person than a real one.)
