Making it sound like they're pathetic and the only reason they could POSSIBLY want that is because they're sorry cowards afraid of THE REAL WORLD is rude.
(I know OP didn't take offense to the comment, just providing a possible explanation. I can think of plenty of reasons I'd rather stay in love with a fictional person than a real one.)
