I think because a lot of the woobiefyers don't view his victims as victims and to be fair I am not shedding any tears over the guy who beat his wife or the frat boy who slowed dance with an alien.

The others I agree he went overboard with.

What about the guy in Mystery Spot? Sure he wasn't nice, but he didn't do anything worth being killed over.

Also, it isn't his right. Those people should have been turned over to the cops. I don't feel bad for him, but being a vigilante isn't okay. And really, he did it less because of what they did and more because it amused him.

I see your point regarding Gabriel, but I'm not sure how much water this bit holds, considering this is SPN we're talking about. Vigilante justice is pretty much its raison d'etre. Usually for supernatural reasons, yes, which don't apply to Gabriel's victims, but generally 'rights' get complicated in any setting involving non-human entities that don't fall under human law.

Gabriel's a stinker, yes. But vigilantism is pretty much the show, and considering what they're dealing with, that's usually for a reason.

If I remember right, one of the things Gabriel was patron of was justice. So singling out assholes to punish for their sins is pretty in keeping with his traditional role (and also fits pretty neatly with the tradition of Tricksters taking people down a peg.)

Another feature that's almost universal with the angels and most other supernatural beings is that they play by their own rules and don't feel bound by human laws and institutions. Gabriel's no worse in that particular respect than any other angel.

I did agree he went overboard with him and by overboard I mean overboard and deep down into the Mariana Trench.

I think he did it because of both, maybe because it amused him at first when he started out but as time went on he might of felt like he was helping out the good people at least that is what I got from his speech to Lucy.
