So you find a guy who kills people for his own petty amusement attractive?

I'll never get why this character is so woobified. Sure, he's a great character in terms of having an interesting story. But he isn't a good guy by any means. He's a petty asshole who manages to do the right thing one time and dies for it. Which doesn't change all the other horrible things he does.

Aaaand here's another comment I would love to broadcast to Tumblr (too bad it'd just be ignored). You're absolutely right. Can't speak for OP obviously, but he is played by an attractive white guy, and the character himself has a sobstory. People are into that kind of thing. I think the fact that he's funny and has style also make him attractive to the majority of other people.

I do wish people would stop glorifying him and glossing over his misdeeds though. That's just problematic, and worrying.

I agree. He's a fun character. SPN does secondary characters really well, I think, and he's one of the best. And he does have an interesting backstory.

It just frustrates me that people forget that while he was the Trickster, he was killing people for fun. Yes, they weren't nice people (varying levels of not nice), but that didn't make it right to kill them.

I have to say, I love the fact that the Stalker!Anons are like "I know it's you, Tiger," and you're like "Um, well, actually, I kinda think he's an asshole..."

Hah! Well they're right that I'm fond of the little tit, I just happen to willingly admit that he's a tit.

I think because a lot of the woobiefyers don't view his victims as victims and to be fair I am not shedding any tears over the guy who beat his wife or the frat boy who slowed dance with an alien.

The others I agree he went overboard with.

What about the guy in Mystery Spot? Sure he wasn't nice, but he didn't do anything worth being killed over.

Also, it isn't his right. Those people should have been turned over to the cops. I don't feel bad for him, but being a vigilante isn't okay. And really, he did it less because of what they did and more because it amused him.

I see your point regarding Gabriel, but I'm not sure how much water this bit holds, considering this is SPN we're talking about. Vigilante justice is pretty much its raison d'etre. Usually for supernatural reasons, yes, which don't apply to Gabriel's victims, but generally 'rights' get complicated in any setting involving non-human entities that don't fall under human law.

Gabriel's a stinker, yes. But vigilantism is pretty much the show, and considering what they're dealing with, that's usually for a reason.

If I remember right, one of the things Gabriel was patron of was justice. So singling out assholes to punish for their sins is pretty in keeping with his traditional role (and also fits pretty neatly with the tradition of Tricksters taking people down a peg.)

Another feature that's almost universal with the angels and most other supernatural beings is that they play by their own rules and don't feel bound by human laws and institutions. Gabriel's no worse in that particular respect than any other angel.

I did agree he went overboard with him and by overboard I mean overboard and deep down into the Mariana Trench.

I think he did it because of both, maybe because it amused him at first when he started out but as time went on he might of felt like he was helping out the good people at least that is what I got from his speech to Lucy.

I think this is so because compared to the rest of the characters on the show, especially with his siblings, he doesn't seem that bad. And for some reason there is always a moral gray area when it comes to trickster characters. They can get away with stuff that the white hats would be looked down on. I think because for tricksters, the targets of their pranks usually deserve punishment. (Though not as harsh as the one's Gabriel handed out.) But I think there's a balancing factor when it comes to trickster characters. That in world of chaos, they are more chaotic and yet usually balance things out.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, sure. But all of that makes him a Trickster. None of that makes him any of the things he is written to be in many if not most fanfics.

True. The Gabriel I find in fanfiction is rarely the Gabriel I watched on supernatural.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
I actually liked the character, with the focus on the Trickster archetype, better before he was revealed as an angel. I wish more of the fic had been written back then.

Oh. I don't really read fanfics.

Well, that theory is scrap. *crumples paper and tosses it over her shoulder*

Never mind.
