Maybe F!S should make it's own quality fiction rec list?

I smell upcoming wank. oh boy.
forgottenjester: (Default)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-05-03 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Why? If so then I'm out. I don't want to start anything. I just thought that since people on F!S have similar tastes it would make sense.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
oh your not starting it? good

characterization will always end up in wank. I bet there will be grammar wanks too. seriously speaking, what kind of submission system will you have? what are the criteria? where will the list be located? who will deal with the eventual broken links? I think this is the biggest obstacle blocks for putting together a rec list rn

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-05-03 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm never one to start it on purpose. My approach to dealing wank is to enjoy it from afar with some popcorn. I don't like being in the middle of it.

I was thinking of just having a thread where people posted their recs. Others could then give it a +1 if they agree. If not they could just keep mum unless the fic in question is being severely misrepresented or something. So yeah, nothing super official. [personal profile] unicornherds was thinking of having a discussion on it. I thought maybe a voting system might be nice. But, again, I wasn't really thinking big.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
oic

threads and free-for-all recs are doable as long as your not saying stuff like "this thread is quality fics only" because people have different standards

maybe "thread of tw fics fs members liked?" keep the description nice and general and rec what you think is quality

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-05-03 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was just thinking of the first poster saying something like, "We seem to have similar tastes here so nothing with packmom!Stiles and things like that." Other than that I was thinking of leaving quality standards up to each individual poster.

Sounds like what I was thinking about, yeah.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
hm k so do it and have fun reading!

[personal profile] unicornherds 2013-05-03 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
That would be interesting. So far we've usually managed to be civil* in discussing different character interpretations and pairings, I wonder if that streak would continue through discussion of a recs list.

*(though there does seem to be one(?) anti-Sterek or mega Scott fan anon that shows up to rant now and then)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-05-03 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I just figure a rec list would be a bunch of people posting what they thought were good in their own comment in one thread. If you agree you could +1 it I suppose. I didn't think much about people not agreeing on what someone else recs.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2013-05-03 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough. I was imagining ensuing discussions of various fic recs. I dunno, I'd be up for anything if it meant I had new fic to read.
forgottenjester: (Default)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-05-03 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, we seem to have been mostly civil so far. I'd be open to discussion but I feel like for every fic there would be someone who did/didn't like it. That would lead to a stalemate. Too bad there's not a voting system we could use or something... I don't know.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2013-05-03 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I feel even a discussion where people don't agree on whether they liked a fic or not is still interesting.

Tangent: This is something that bothers me about fandom lately. It seems like the only way people can be civil or feel a discussion is worthy is if they all agree. Or one side must "win" the discussion. I miss talking about stuff with various opinions and nobody having to be "right", just an interesting discussion with different interpretations that stays civil. Not that this is everywhere, just something I see a lot.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-05-03 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
True. It can be. But apparently the anon above believe it could get quite heated. I'm not sure how to get around that. Do you?

I agree that it is worrisome, the trend you mention, but isn't that how it is in all walks of life? Look at real world politics or anything like that. It's very polarizing and people tend to only be civil when they have their own opinions shown to them.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2013-05-03 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
I imagine it could get heated, but I dunno. Maybe I just like to think better of people and imagine that a rec list/discussion could go smoothly.

It's definitely noticed this polarizing outside of fandom. I think why it's irking me so much lately is actually "discussions" I've been seeing on Facebook lately where things don't even start civil, people just jump into insulting the other side. I just sit here and think "can't we all just get along?"
forgottenjester: (Default)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-05-03 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
One can hope. I have no idea how it could go, honestly.

"can't we all just get along?"

You can't if people don't want to.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I think rec lists might be more credible to everyone if the author of said rec list disclaimed it at the top with his/her likes and dislikes to let the readers get a feel for what kind of reader she is.

You could rec me day and night, but if I don't know what kind of reader you are, I'm in terra incognita diving into your rec list. Remember in elementary school when we had to do book reports and be super specific about what we liked and didn't like? What happened to that?

I think being specific about those things would help a lot, too.

Like, I'm reccing a Chris/Peter fic. I loved certain things about it and I disliked a few things about it, but overall the good outweighs the bad.

I think people should know that and if they get a good, two-sided review, it gives a reccer some cred.

But just giving me the link and the author's own description isn't going to tell me if I'm going to like it. I just don't have that kind of time to wade through all your fireman/cop AUs (no offense. Don't like the AUs like that).

A rec is the greatest marketing tool a writer has. It's word of mouth that reaches a new audience. It should be a critical review that sways someone to take the time to read it.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2013-05-03 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I've been lucky because a lot of the recs I see are like this. They list the story and details, and then underneath in notes list what they liked about it. Admittedly some of the time there's just a general "this was cute", but for the most part there's enough of a note to give me a feel for why people are recing j(reccing? rec'ing?) the story.

I for one am not so great at recs because I'm not very good at pinpointing or articulating what exactly I liked about it. Words are often not my friend. But I try.

It's sometimes easier to do a reverse rec - Give people a theme and maybe what you are/aren't looking for and have them rec within those parameters. Back in SGA there was a genrefinders community where people would do this - I used to use the comm as a good fic finding resource. Something like that would be handy for every fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
my problem is that those rec lists are usually 99.9% Sterek.

And I don't mind them, but they are not my TW OTP (I know, swimming uphill and all that).

[personal profile] unicornherds 2013-05-03 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
That is a definite problem.

I never went into this trying to break away from the popular ship. It just happened.

Eh, I don't mind dropping rec lists, but that's usually under the assumption that I make it pretty obvious about what I like while gushing about what I like about each rec. Haven't recced anything from anything in a while though tbh.

I like when people ask for recs though, and when they let people know what fics or themes and things they like; you can tailor a rec list for that person (like the people who do like pack mom stiles. there are certainly good fics with that fanon if you're into it).

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-05-03 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I've never done a rec list myself. I just thought that it seems since people here have similar tastes in characterization that it might be beneficial for all of use to rec a fic or two.

There are? (Honest question.)

be here in the morning just to hear me say is what I consider a nice starter fic for people who are new to the Pack Family, Mama Stiles, and typical Sterek tropes, and I'd actually recommend it more for people who are new to the show since it was written pre-S2.
It takes off after s1 under the assumption that Lydia and Jackson are turned, and Derek is a grumpy Alpha trying to teach his wolf children how to wolf around. Stiles doesn't fit in, and his bff is busy making out and attending wolf meetings, so he adopts a puppy dog. For some reason everyone flips the fuck out.

first to last and the smiles between oh hey remember how shitty Derek's house looks? Maybe the pack family should get on that already before the city has to tear down this danger zone. Also, Stiles cooks homemade meals for everyone (because obviously he'd know how to cook since he's in charge of his dad's meals, riiiiight 8D)

idk. I'm just going by a few of my first bookmarks tbh.

I haven't found one I like yet so I'll definitely check them out. I honestly didn't know good ones existed. Thank you for the recs.
