Re: Non-fandom friends and fic

My mom is always asking me what I've written lately and I always tell her I don't write anymore. It makes her sad but I think she'd have a heart attack if I told her I've been writing about a bunch of male TV show and movie characters having sex with each other.

It sounds like your friend is a lot more receptive to fanfic in general so it might not be that much of a stretch if you tell her that you write explicit slash, even if you have to explain what that is.

Whatever happens, good luck! I know how awkward a position that can be :/

Show her one of your non-explicit fics?

It sounds like she's okay with the fandom aspect, if she said she's excited to read Hannibal fic. Test the waters maybe with admitting to mostly being romantic stories (if shipping is what you mean by involving dicks), then go on to say it's explicit.

Whenever I've brought up the topic people are fine with it. Just another kind of nerdy hobby I have, no big.

I'm definitely not comfortable showing fic to non-fandom friends. I've gone empty-handed to my writer's group some weeks when all I've written is fic; it's less embarrassing to just pretend I haven't written anything.

Maybe introduce her to the general idea of fanfiction before letting her read yours? Something like, "Hey, I'm not finished writing mine yet, but in the meantime I came across this fic I thought you'd like" and then link her to something sort of like what you write, so you can gauge her reaction. idk.

Tell her that it's primarily wish-fullfillment stuff that you'd feel embarrased sharing with people who you know in person?

Either link her to fic similar to yours and get her reaction to it or find some way to ask her if she thinks 2 guys getting it on is hot (I tried to feel out one friend on the subject one time when the convo was somehow on the guys like 2 lesbians together thing about how hot she found 2 guys getting it on--she didn't like it so I kept quiet) or tell her you've had a hard drive malfunction/virus attack, etc. and now your stories are gone; wow, this is one hell of a run-on sentence. :)

Have you ever tried talking to her about fandom/fanfiction?

If not, before you show her your fics, open the dialogue about that. Get her used to and understanding of the idea before you bring your own creations into it. That way it is easier for you to gauge if this is the kind of person who will take fanfics serious enough to read them properly (and not all writers are) plus it'll probably give her some time to wrap her mind around the idea of people writing fanfic.
