poly isn't my cuppa, but this sounds like an issue in a similar vein of everyone is gay.

well it's... kind of like that, but it's not usually such a clear-cut thing for most people the way "gay/not gay/all of the above and see below" tends to be thought of

but it's often used as a way to conveniently pull multiple characters together into a fairly unbelievable relationship for shipping purposes, yes, and is often why people will complain about a lot of poly fic not really being "readable" beyond pwp orgies

although i kind of detest the implications behind that particular trope either way

Oh god, I remember this one writer in SGA fandom that wrote the everyone is gay in EVERY fanfic and then she started writing threesomes. So it was everyone is gay and poly. The PWPs were nice, but the rest...
