i love fanfic poly but i think it should be treated a bit more realistically sometimes... the initial struggle for a previously monogamous person to adjust to that level of openness isn't just some magical overnight "everything's cool" kind of thing. i've seen many people in my life switch to poly relationships after being monogamous their entire lives and handle it really well. but there's still adjustments and yeah... i think it can be done well pretty much no matter what fandom/characters you're working with (with some exceptions for SUPER monogamous people... i'm sure they can be written poly well enough by a good writer but it'd be interesting to see how that'd even work)

tl;dr i think it can work, but there's a lot to work out there, yes.

you lack imagination

(Anonymous) 2013-05-04 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Not liking something that's super unrealistic does not mean the person lacks imagination.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-04 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
or maybe the fanfic the OP has seen lacks it.

if three or more previously monogamous people suddenly decide "let's ALL be together!" and it's immediately rainbows and unicorns and multiple orgasms with no struggles or jealousy or trust issues or scheduling conflicts or just "seriously how big is this bed that five of them are sleeping there comfortably"... all of this CAN WORK, but so often i see fanfic authors just ignore the realistic issues that come with a case of Sudden Polyamory in favor of just "it's now perfect! all problems solved!*"

(*I've seen this attitude in real life too, sadly. a couple is struggling, perhaps one can't not cheat, they decide to be poly to "fix it"... surprise surprise it doesn't work like that)

Well, if your problem is with numbers, not with characterizations (which is what I find difficult to overcome), then you should probably remember that such a small group (in such specific conditions) is not representative. Statistics doesn't work here.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-04 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Most "poly" fic isn't realistic at all and being a poly person it bugs the shit out of me. The fic that I've seen tends to focus on sex and always pits two of the people against the third so that ultimately just one pairing comes out of it leaving the third in the dust. It clearly sends the message that monogamy is the preferred and ultimate outcome of a poly relationship which is bologna.

Never mind the fact that in reality there's a lot more than just three people involved. A lot more dynamics I mean. There are poly households comprised of multiple partners paired in various ways, poly people that don't actually share partners, and heck poly identified people that are single. What a concept!

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
(Your second sentence.) Really? that's sad. Most of the poly ships I've been a fan of (Hardison/Parker/Eliot, El/Peter/Neal, George/Mitchell/Annie, etc) attract me precisely because the interactions between all of them are so awesome in canon that I don't want to choose only two to pair up. I was inclined to think most poly fic was written for that reason.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-04 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I have this exact same issue with ace!fic, which I'd never had much of an issue with before, but it seems to be creeping into some of my fandoms more and more lately. I'm all for representation of issues outside of a character's usual wheelhouse, but 99% of the time it's not only unrealistically dealt with, but in direct contradiction to the author's character of choice. I'll never understand why people so desperate to see their own issues covered, whether it's actually relevant to the show/characters/whatever or not, don't just throw in a self-insert OC and call a spade a spade...

(Anonymous) 2013-05-04 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
My experience has been that orientation-centered fic is usually not written by people who identity with the orientation in question.

My fandom had the ace phase some two or three years ago, and it drove me up the wall because it was all but how do they deal with not getting sex from their heart's desire. Being ace influences my life in a number of small but interesting ways, but angsting about the sex I wouldn't be having with a potential mate isn't among them.

I don't mind poly, but it's just something I don't have an interest in personally and I tend to not like it in my fic. I mean, I know it can work, but it's just not something that appeals to me personally. It could fit characters, but it's juts not what I'm into.

As for buying it...I think there could be 3+ in a group that could be into that, but it depends on the characters. For a lot of things it would be OOC, but there are some fandoms where it could be a lot more believable.
sabotabby: (doom doom doom)

[personal profile] sabotabby 2013-05-04 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on the canon. If they're just random people thrown together for whatever reason, I won't find it believable. If they share some kind of history or secret or whatever that the outside world just wouldn't get, I find it a lot more believable. And, of course, it depends on the writer's ability. If you can take me from Point A in the canon to Point B in your fic where it totally makes sense, I'm all over it.

+1

Yeah, poly relationships in fanfic really require a good chemistry between those characters, and I've very rarely seen it done convincingly. Some fanfic writers think that two guys = hot, so more guys = hotter! Except no.

(Like fucking Robin!poly slash fanfic. Having two of the DC Robins in a relationship can be a stretch enough, but multiples of them? With their history? LOL nooooo.)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-04 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Any chance this could turn into a poly fic rec thread?

I love poly fanfic and I've found some that's been done very well. Obviously there are plenty of exceptions and there are certain poly-ships that just don't work for me because of my own interpretation of the characters/what we've seen in canon but I still like poly fanfic, in general.

But I haven't seen much of it in fiction outside of fanfic. Are there lots of poly people/couples in books I'm just not reading? Are there lots of poly people/couples in movies I haven't seen? Because I would like to see/read them!

In realist fandoms I can get that, but is that really more of a stretch to believe than the existence of werewolves etc?

The only poly relationship I really buy in fic is Neal/El/Peter from White Collar. For some reason it works to me.

I think that's reasonable. Apart from issues of realism, it would really take a lot of character development for most fics to believably establish the dynamic necessary for a lot of poly stories.

My feeling is that most of the time it's better left to original fiction, but at the same time I do find it a lot of fun when people write poly relationships in canons with cloistered friends groups.

Mostly because I hate how a lot of stories seem to end up breaking groups of people apart, and having their old relationships collapse in the wake of their metamorphosis into beautiful social butterflies and Real Adults.

I can't do poly fic in general

"Solving" love triangles with poly fic is the worst decision ever. Seriously, that shit never pans out. :/

poly isn't my cuppa, but this sounds like an issue in a similar vein of everyone is gay.

I don't read it.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-05 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
If you had written that most of the poly fic that you had read was at least somewhat unrealistic, I would probably agree with you. The thing is, if I really think about it, the way you put it makes me think that you don't believe that a poly relationship could happen in any fictional setting without a huge cast. And really all you need is three people who want a relationship with each other. And those three people will exist in a slightly bigger group of people by virtue of existing at all.

Plus, even a show not focused on romance or sex can still have characters in a relationship (every show I've ever watched has implied or outright stated that the characters do stuff off-screen).

It's fanfiction you can do anything in fic.

The reason I like to write poly is because it's a scenario which is ripe for drama and conflict. I like writing how hard it can be for three people to get together in a relationship, especially when the relationship goes long term.

But that's just me.
