I just read the Charlaine Harris page, and I'm confused about her objections (though I don't think she shouldn't have a right to object. It's not going to change anything, but that doesn't mean she shouldn't be able to disapprove).

Anyway, this is from her site:

Q. Can I post my cool story about Sookie on this site?

A. No, and I’ll tell you why. No fanfic can appear on this website. Not only does it make me feel strange to have other people use my characters, but there are legal issues to consider.

Here’s an example:

Enthusiastic Reader: Wouldn’t it be great if Sookie adopted Hunter?

Would be okay.

TooEnthusiasticReader: Wouldn’t it be great if Hunter came to Sookie’s house and said, “Aunt Sookie, can I play in your attic?” And then Sookie let him, and Hunter came down and said, “Did you know there’s a ghost in your attic?”

This is NOT okay.

Am I the only person who has no idea what she's trying to say here?

I think she's sayin that she thinks there's a line? Like its okay to come up with cool head canons but don't be too elaborate about it?

Idk that doesn't make sense either really.

On rereading I worked out that I think she's just saying what would be appropriate for people to post on her site, as in what 'crosses the line' over into fanfic. Still don't know why one is okay and the other definitively isn't though. I mean, I can guess, but I still think the onus is on her to actually explain her objections properly.

Yes that's just weird and vague as hell.

One is simple speculation and the other is actually adding to the world and putting words into a character's mouth, but there are better ways to show the difference between writing an actual narrative and speculation.

I would bet a lot of money it's a legal thing. Because if the scenario is specific rather than generic, and she later uses a similar storyline, the person who posted it on her site can claim that she stole it from them & try and make a ton of money in court. I don't know about this specific instance but that's usually the impetus behind this kind of thing.

Then why doesn't she just say that for legal reasons she cannot read any fan fiction posted on any site, and will return all manuscripts unread if mailed to her, and will delete all proposed manuscripts unread if emailed?
