Eh, it happens in a lot of fandoms, OP. Not only the popular ones. Usually fandoms have some small corners where people can chillax while all the wank is going on, so maybe you should find one or even make one. Anywway, don't fret too much about it.

Almost everything is just clique bullshit, and a bunch of circlejerking.

You want to discuss the actual media?
Or ask any kind of question that you might not immediately know, but is "totally just so obvious" to the group there?

Basically this. Just try to find people that are legitimately nice and mostly drama-free, and you'll have a much better time.

It's not you. It's just fandom. Every fandom (and I would even narrow it to every fandom on the internet) has its dramas and craziness. You just have to learn to ignore it or let it go past you, or it'll ruin everything.

It is possible to have fun in fandom spaces. You just have to learn how to carve out the right niche for yourself.

IMO most fandom discussions, when something's been out for 5, 10, 15, 20 years...happened ages ago, and people are tired of discussing the same shit over and over. Not to mention that people's opinions start to become skewed as they develop headcanon (if they're around long enough for this) and they've had the same discussion 20 times. :/

The gossip thing isn't okay but just be honest and say you don't want to talk about that stuff, you'd rather talk about the source material.

This tends to happen with older fandoms a lot. I really do hate when a fandom becomes all about the RP because a lot if times the characters get wrapped up in the roleplayers' headcanons and you can't have a decent discussion about the character without that factoring in. (like, I'm sorry, but just because you rp someone doesn't mean you get the last word on them).

Honestly if your fandom is mostly RP, I understand your pain. Though for me, I just rarely connect with people at all. I just don't really know how, in fandom.
