FMA was actually the fandom I was thinking of when I wrote this: http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/801470.html?thread=652096446#cmt652096446

I didn't even think the first anime was especially darker until fans of the manga and Brotherhood kept saying that was the only reason anyone likes the first anime better. Sorry, I just do?

(But my reason probably is nostalgia, and that the manga's fans are so damn elitist in every way possible.)

That's a little reversed to what I've seen. Seriously- step onto Tumblr. It's legions of 2003 fans waxing on and on about how dark and dreary and meaningful and horrible the first season is, and how Brotherhood fans sucks for not getting it's depressing depth. I've pretty much run into nobody saying that's the only reason people like it- just that that's the only reason people couldn't handle it.

Honestly [and I'm the one who started this little thread] I don't care if people prefer the original. I'm not that kind of fan. But lately, I've been really ticked at this idea that Brotherhood and the actual source material for the whole shebang [the manga] is this namby-pamby sunshine and puppies fest. Have ALL sorts of reasons for preferring the original-- but it's not superior because it doesn't have a happy ending.

The only irritating repeat reason I've seen that manga/Brotherhood fans inflict on 2003 fans is that they ONLY like it because they saw it first. I think that's a huge reason, but not a... dishonest one? Or one that makes them delusional? Favorite shows are all about how they make you feel. And just like I look at the 2003 anime and think 'My show, what have they done!' FMA2003 fans think the exact same of Brotherhood, and that's perfectly normal.
