I've been running into this concept a LOT with the FMA fandom. I prefer Brotherhood. And lately, the [never-ending] argument for the 2003 anime being superior isn't so much about preferred characterizations, plotlines, the movie, etc. It's this idea that FMA2003 is better because worse things happen. That it's better because there is more shock and horror, that everyone gets their asses handed to them in the end. I just don't think that makes it deeper. Darker? Yes, absolutely. But it's not better for that. It's just different.
For example: I don't think Brotherhood/Manga Roy Mustang is a poorly written character because he DOESN'T have crippling PTSD and a sad ending. 2003 Roy isn't superior because there is more wrong with him. Maybe that's your cup of tea, maybe he's better to you, but it's a personal preference, not fact. Things don't have to be awful for them to mean something.

Nostalgia could also be playing a factor. I know I'm biased to whatever version of a thing I've seen first, especially if it was in childhood.

Oh, definitely. I completely believe that nostalgia plays a big role in the preference, and that by far people prefer FMA2003 because they saw it first. I just don't hold with the idea that FMA2003 is better because it's more depressing, and that the only reason folks like Brotherhood is because they can't handle the angsty depth. Arguments for thinking it the superior anime used to run the better characters/better plot gamut, and lately they've devolved into '2003 is better because Ed cries a lot, and Roy is a broken shell of a man and Brotherhood is cheesy fun-times Shonen schlock'. My point is, the original can be better for many reasons, but I can't stand the 'darker=deeper' argument.

I admittedly haven't seen the 2003 anime, so I have no opinion on how good/bad it is compared to Brotherhood, but part of the reason I loved Brotherhood as much as I did was that I felt the ending wrapped things up pretty perfectly. There were a lot of fairly dark things that happened throughout the series, but there was always a sort of underlying optimism, even when things were at their worst. It was really nice to see that optimism pay off and for things to work out well in the end, even if there were a lot of sacrifices made along the way to reach that point.

+1

Fans of the 2003 anime [which is far more depressing, life-sucks in tone] tend to criticize this underlying optimism as being run-of-the-mill shonen adventuring.

I personally think Brotherhood [or more accurately, the manga itself] is a masterpiece. Different strokes, though.

Yeah, it sounds like it's just a case of different tastes, but I'm with you in thinking that the manga and Brotherhood were really, really well put together.

I also think saying Brotherhood and the manga are run-of-the-mill shonen adventuring just because there's an underlying optimism seems a bit silly, given how complex and well-developed the storyline and most of the characters are. But that could just be the fan in me talking. Lol.

FMA was actually the fandom I was thinking of when I wrote this: http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/801470.html?thread=652096446#cmt652096446

I didn't even think the first anime was especially darker until fans of the manga and Brotherhood kept saying that was the only reason anyone likes the first anime better. Sorry, I just do?

(But my reason probably is nostalgia, and that the manga's fans are so damn elitist in every way possible.)

That's a little reversed to what I've seen. Seriously- step onto Tumblr. It's legions of 2003 fans waxing on and on about how dark and dreary and meaningful and horrible the first season is, and how Brotherhood fans sucks for not getting it's depressing depth. I've pretty much run into nobody saying that's the only reason people like it- just that that's the only reason people couldn't handle it.

Honestly [and I'm the one who started this little thread] I don't care if people prefer the original. I'm not that kind of fan. But lately, I've been really ticked at this idea that Brotherhood and the actual source material for the whole shebang [the manga] is this namby-pamby sunshine and puppies fest. Have ALL sorts of reasons for preferring the original-- but it's not superior because it doesn't have a happy ending.

The only irritating repeat reason I've seen that manga/Brotherhood fans inflict on 2003 fans is that they ONLY like it because they saw it first. I think that's a huge reason, but not a... dishonest one? Or one that makes them delusional? Favorite shows are all about how they make you feel. And just like I look at the 2003 anime and think 'My show, what have they done!' FMA2003 fans think the exact same of Brotherhood, and that's perfectly normal.
