I learnt English from watching subbed TV shows and reading fanfiction with the help of a dictionary. I'm currently doing my undergrad in an English-speaking university. While my initial goal was not academia, but more along the lines of thinking it would be fun to be able to watch stuff without subs and actually understand what the people were saying, the simple desire to learn has brought me much further than I ever dared to dream. Similarly, it was contemporary cinema that sparked my interest in French, but I've been delighted to realise that I can now read Corneille and Voltaire without much trouble.

I think any reason of wanting to learn a language is a good one - any reason of wanting to learn anything, overall. Having big and impressive goals is great, but that can be intimidating to many people. (Myself included.) Even if your initial endgame is wanting to watch anime without subs, you never know where it's eventually going to take you.
