I've never listened to podfics, but I *DO* listen to audiobooks regularly. There are some good narrators with gifts for voices to make each character seem right. When it's done well, those audiobooks can seem like great radio plays.

Sex scenes can be awkward no matter who is reading them, though, even with the best readers. I tend to think that's less the fault of the reader and more the fault of the writer.

So anon... don't despair that all audio stories are bad. You'll probably have to pick something professional instead of fannish, and find a good narrator. You can listen to samples on Audible, for example, if you want to give a few of them a shot.
