Is someone holding you down and forcing you to listen to podfics?

"besides I can just ignore podfics" OP knows they can avoid them, doesn't mean they don't hate them.

I also can't get into podfics (especially when there is sex). The vast majority are horribly done to begin with (weird pauses, background noise, or just horrible voices), adding fake moans and dirty talk just make me cringe.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
I listen to audible a lot. That's one of the reasons I cant finish some series of books. It's just too awkward listening to sex.

Yeeeeeah, agreed on one point: I don't want to listen to anyone read sex to me. I adore a few podfics though - funny pg stuff.

I like the new thing where dramatic actors read portions of shitty romance novels, but that's only because it's not meant to be sexy so much as it's meant to be cringe-inducingly hilarious. Have some Lord Tywin reading Shades of Grey

OMG. I was going to comment with whether or not an audio version of 50 Shades of Grey counted as podfic, but this is so much better.

Oh,I remember wank last time I lurked here in a podfic secret.

I gave a chance to podfic, but they just don't satisfy me.I can't pay attention when I'm listening something,so it all blurs to me as background noise for my activities.

I never listened to smut, but I can easily imagine a scenario where a reader starts moaning to describe sex sounds.

Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean that other people don't. I personally love podfic, and some of my favorites are nc-17 slash read by women. There's some poorly-done ones out there, just like with anything, but that doesn't mean that there isn't some quality stuff too. If you don't like it, just ignore it and move on. More awesome fem-read smut for me! :D

(Anonymous) 2013-05-05 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never tried to listen to one because, yeah, I don't want to listen to someone awkwardly reading sex scenes - or really any scenes. I want to "listen" to the characters' voices in my head as I read. Plus I personally just don't get as emotionally involved in audio books or radio plays as I do when I read the stories myself.

Obviously other people can do what they want and are welcome to it.

I always kinda think, "hey, maybe I should get into that" because I like reading fanfic, but I also need to Get Work Done, and audio things work better for me because of that.

But I've been spoiled. Between James Marsters' reading of the Dresden Files and fantastic radio plays like Black Jack Justice, I am way too picky. I couldn't get through all of the ASoIaF audio books because I hated the way that guy read the characters. So I don't know if the average girl reading her way through a Clint/Coulson fic is really gonna work for me.

And let's not even talk about the smutty bits. Bad enough when the ASoIaF tried to narrate those parts.

I tried to get into it once but as soon as the person reading gave different voices to the characters I felt so much secondhand embarassment I had to press stop and never pressed play again.

I love audio books and audio plays. But when it's fanfic... no, just... I can't handle it.

I've been recording a small backlog of podfic lately, and I just need to find the time to actually edit them before posting and all that, but I kind of agree about the smut. I made the mistake of asking permission to record one that has such scenes, and I've been putting it off because I find it very awkward to read out loud. Maybe it's a combination of it simply not working as something that can be heard, rather than read, and my own awkwardness with trying to tackle that with some decency, but I'm mostly going with awkwardness.

I am never sensually whispering that kind of noise at my mic again oh god.

Also, I now wish I had more femslash bookmarked for me to work with. Yes, I know you hate podfic, but still. Them's are still valid crits imo.

I've never seen a podfic. But my fandoms are smaller and don't seem to have any. I could see how it might be awkward if the reader is bad. Too bad we can't have Morgan Freeman reading all of our fanfics aloud. At the very least it'd be funny.

yeahhhh i never got the appeal either but i do understand it's there. it's like audiobooks i guess, easier to get through and put on in the background if you don't have time to physically sit down and read. that said, someone narrating porn to me would totally give me second-hand embarrassment...

(Anonymous) 2013-05-05 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I find women doing podfics blogs and the like always sound so much more...scripted? Less natural? than men, which is why I avoid them.

I have a long commute to work and I like listening to podfic to get me through that hell. But since there's little to none available in my fandom, I record my own- even record some of my own stories that lend themselves to reading aloud. I'm not a great reader and I'm still figuring out the technical end, but what choice do I have when no one else is reading my pairings?

I can see why people wouldn't care for it-reading aloud well is a real talent, but otoh, if you commute two hours a day, it can be a lifesaver.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I think podfic is one of those things that you either love or loathe. I enjoy it, personally, because it's fun to put on while I'm gaming or doing other things, but I understand your DNW reaction. There are a lot of not so great podficcers out there, but there are some that I honestly wouldn't mind hearing them do professional audiobooks. Sex scenes are interesting, since I've listened to some podfic wherein they are SUPER AWKWARD, but I've listened to some that are much more well read and don't give me secondhand embarrassment. It all depends on the reader, really. That being said, I commend anyone who reads podfic and does sex scenes because I know I would be terrible at it and too embarrassed to even try.

I don't loathe podfic, but I can never remember anything that's dictated to me. It's why I've always hated being read to, it all fades into "blah blah blah words" by the second paragraph, especially if it's a really nice voice reading it, then I just let myself be relaxed by it and think of everything except the story.

But I know I would be unable to handle porn podfic if I was ever drunk enough to listen to it. All I can imagine is somebody droning on with all deep seriousness "her sweet pussy dripping wet" or something mortifying like that and I'm just like "nope".

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I like listening to women just like me reading sex scenes we both find arousing, provided they are good readers. Maybe because I'm bi, but I don't think that's all of it. A lot of people's issues with podfic seem to spring from shame about fanfic and porn. You hate that other people aren't as embarrassed by it as you would be. How dare these women earnestly read aloud gay sex - don't they realize how ridiculous that is?
Like dudes, we're all amateurs- that's kind of the deal.

I've never listened to podfics, but I *DO* listen to audiobooks regularly. There are some good narrators with gifts for voices to make each character seem right. When it's done well, those audiobooks can seem like great radio plays.

Sex scenes can be awkward no matter who is reading them, though, even with the best readers. I tend to think that's less the fault of the reader and more the fault of the writer.

So anon... don't despair that all audio stories are bad. You'll probably have to pick something professional instead of fannish, and find a good narrator. You can listen to samples on Audible, for example, if you want to give a few of them a shot.
