I'll admit to having a burning hatred for the guy in the past for similar reasons. Right now I'm mostly kind of indifferent to how he was in that film- though I actually did find him funny sometimes. I kind of understand some of his behaviour too though now- after all human kids were nothing more then toxic animals to them it seemed. I mean it doesn't make a lot of sense but Sulley acted as if she was a puppy at first (a RADIOACTIVE puppy, but a puppy nonetheless), putting newspapers down etc. I never got the impression monsters really 'got' humans were on the same level as monsters in terms of well, person-hood and Sulley was only beginning to catch on they MIGHT be wrong on that- but even that's debateable, he might just have got attached because well she was cute etc and realised she wasn't dangerous.

So in Mikes eyes Sulley was ruining their lives for just some dumb and dangerous animal. I mean yeah I don't approve of people who mistreat certain species (certain snakes) because of their misconceptions on them but it doesn't make them evil necessarily. Just grossly mis-informed.

Oddly I think this new prequel might help me like him though too, which is pretty strange.

He's not my favorite character, either, but I'm not sure where you're getting "self-centered narcissist who didn't care about the most important people in his life." Granted it's been a while since I saw the movie, but - did I miss something?

I think he's referring to when Sully went back to rescue the girl after they had been banished and Mike refused. Personally I don't blame Mike. Sully had ruined pretty much his entire life because he(Sully) kept making bad/stupid decisions. Mike even TOLD him not to go to Waternoose and Sully went anyway, which only amounted in them getting thrown out of the monster world.

I dunno, I love both characters and Mike certainly has his faults but I don't think he's as self-centered as people think or narcissist.

Thought he was pretty annoying myself, but I didn't particularly hate him or anything.

He kind of grated on me, because he stood in the way of the very likable Sully (though he had logical points), but how did he not care about those important to him? He cared a lot about his best friend, to the point where he was looking out for Sully more than Sully was looking out for him. Like when they end up in the Himalayas.

Nah, pretty much this. Monsters Inc is actually my least favorite Pixar movie--it was...okay? Aaaahhhh! Real Monsters already did it and was funnier IMHO. And him...just didn't like him. For all the reasons you list.

I also thought the movie was okay at best even though I really enjoyed it when I was younger. It just smelled so much like ARM and nowadays I'm just sad that they didn't just make an ARM movie instead of Monsters Inc.

So much for "Pixar is so innovative". I don't get why this movie gets a prequel (no wait, I do. Because the monster characters are almost as marketable as the many, MANY cars from Cars).

I don't hate Mike, but I think you don't need to root for Randall to hate him. He's one of those characters that can get really annoying real quick.

Like I said, I don't hate him, but I kind of dislike him. Sometimes he's just too much of the "lolol funny sidekick" type of character. If OP doesn't find him funny it's easy to point out why he would get on their nerves.
