Reading this post reminds me of how American horror films nowadays need "explanations" for everything whereas foreign horror films are just batshit crazy just because.

Yeah, kinda. I mean, this isn't exactly a favorite of mine, but I felt it was all clear enough. There something weird that fucks with certain people's minds and draws them to the holes, where they suffer horrific worse-than-death. That's easily understandable. Why it happens and how it works is unknown, but that doesn't have to be understood, because a part of the horror is not knowing why. Eldritch horrors aren't meant to sit down and give interviews on their motivations and processes.

Horror books, too. The explanations often ruin the horror for me, because they're usually not as bad as what my imagination comes up with. I'm willing to accept that a reason for everything that happens in the story exists without actually needing to know, word for word, what it is. Hints and implications are all I need to fuel my dread.
