Reading this post reminds me of how American horror films nowadays need "explanations" for everything whereas foreign horror films are just batshit crazy just because.

wait, people actually think this is scary? i thought it was amazingly hilarious with a touch of uneasiness, like all his works.

Agreed. I thought it was overrated and kind of dumb.

I love Junji Ito's work, but it's often gross-out farce instead of horror.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I think any element of horror and discomfort comes less from the thing itself, and any explanation of it, and more from the character's reaction to it - it's more about the mental state and the uneasiness that accompanies it than anything else. There's something I find deeply discomforting and freaky about the idea of being inexorably drawn to something as harmful and destructive and painful as all that, to the point that it's almost as though you're compelled for no explicable reason. That's something I find pretty scary, and I think that mental states like that one are where a lot of the effectiveness of Junji Ito's manga comes from. No, of course it's not plausible, and the end is pretty hilarious taken out of context, but that's not really the point.

The guy had a dream where ancient cavemen used those holes as a punishment, we have no idea if he's right.

For all we know, the cavemen didn't build them either, but just found them as well. At least, that's how I read it, and that's why I thought it was so creepy.

(Though my issues with claustrophobia might be why I find it more terrifying then you do.)

It's creepypasta with pictures. I don't know why people are so freaked out by it, and I don't know why you're so invested in understanding it. It's a neat little creepy thing. That's ALL.

It's Junji Ito.

Like, everything you've just described is the signature Ito format.
Weird shit.
Shits thats so weird it border on being comical+ a sense of looming dread and helplessness to change for the victim. I don't think it's that you dislike horror, you just don't like Ito's formula for writing manga.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I mostly got creeped out at it because I was listening to a youtube reading of it (this guy who plays games also sometimes reads creepy-pasta/stories.) Sometimes atmosphere is everything.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Erm... OP, you do realize crazy outlandish shit is pretty much the whole basis of horror right? Why are you trying to apply logic to it?

Junji Ito's stuff in general is supposed to be slightly ridiculous. His cat diary manga is fantastic.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy shit that thing gave me nightmares for a solid week.

Granted, I wasn't particularly emotionally stable when I read it and I'm really easily scared. Still feel pathetic about it tho.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
There are a lot of people in this thread going "But WHY does it need to make sense? It's scary because it's happening for no reason!"

That's a great attitude to have because it gives you a wider variety of things to be scared by. I'm not gonna speak against it. To me, though, horror needs to have at least a LITTLE explanation, or it's just reads as a bloodstained version of "OMG look I'm so randum!! SQUIRRELS lol !1one!"

Maybe it depends how your imagination goes? Like some people, such as the OP, read Enigma and think of those questions sort of outside the manga itself, thus see them as annoying plotholes the author either didn't answer or doesn't have the answers to. And other people - the ones who find the story scary - acknowledge those questions too, but look at them in the context of the manga and that adds to their enjoyment, because in their interpretation, there is an answer, just one no one knows.

Personally, I like Junji Ito's stuff because it's not explained. Weird shit happens and no one knows why. That scares me. The universe he creates seem to be just inherently hostile, and that's creepy, to me. I would like to know where those holes came from, just like I'd like to know where Tomie came from or just what the fuck was happening in Kurozu-Cho in Uzumaki, but if I did have those answers, the stories probably wouldn't scare me anymore.

I'm not sure if that made any sense, it did go a bit rambly.

[personal profile] ex_paola492 2013-05-06 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Why are there any holes? Why are people attracted to the holes?

It's an enigma. ~(°o°)~

The one that really stayed with me, and I think it's one of his best, is Uzumaki. I couldn't look at spirals for a week, after reading it. Also Gyo. The fucking shark thing, I swear.

It...did freak me out, honestly. I'm not a horror fan, but I think the suspension of disbelief comes to me pretty easily because I read/play/watch a lot of fantasy. I don't need to know why, because in the context of the story, it just is.

There's something more frightening about things that aren't and don't seem able to be explained in those stories too. And the last few panels definitely squicked me.

So for you creepy implications aren't enough, that's fine.

For some of us, the "this is creepy even though it doesn't make that much sense and could be seen as hilarious but that makes the creepy undertones worse" is what makes us find stuff like that scary.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
OP, I kind of hate you for reminding me that this exists.

Everyone has different buttons for everything. Sometimes stuff hits your OH SHIT button, but for someone else it's going to hit their WTF LOL button. I love me some Junji Ito, but that doesn't mean Everything He Does is going to Always Scare The Shit Out Of (or darkly induce guilty little giggles in) Absolutely Everyone.

tl;dr IT'S OKAY TO NOT LIKE THINGS
