I have a friend who's similar; she doesn't really get into horror much, and I think the issue she's having is similar to yours. For example, she read The Shining, and didn't enjoy it. We talked about why, and realized that she'd been reading it as though it were a mystery novel. All the weird little glimpses of the hotel's past, all the victims and horrors, she'd been filing away as puzzle pieces that, she had expected, would add up to an explanation. When they didn't, she felt let down and confused.

From what you say, it sounds like that's the reaction you're having, and that's okay. It seems like horror as a genre, which is generally not into providing reasons and explanations, isn't really your thing. I think we all have genres that don't work for us because they don't hit how we engage with narrative.

although, maybe op might be into different kind of horror stories?
