There are a lot of people in this thread going "But WHY does it need to make sense? It's scary because it's happening for no reason!"

That's a great attitude to have because it gives you a wider variety of things to be scared by. I'm not gonna speak against it. To me, though, horror needs to have at least a LITTLE explanation, or it's just reads as a bloodstained version of "OMG look I'm so randum!! SQUIRRELS lol !1one!"

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
This is the best explanation of that manga.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Two points here.

First, I feel like comparing something to "lol randum xd" IS speaking against it.

Two, I don't think anyone has said that it's completely arbitrary why it's scary. There's reasons it's scary. There are explanations for what is frightening about it. It's just that the explanation isn't connected to plausibility. "lol randum xd" isn't a valid comparison, because in that case, there's no reason that something is funny except random; in this case, there is a reason something is frightening, it just isn't something that could actually exist.

Nothing wrong with finding it not frightening or not liking it because it's not plausible! I just don't think that's a great comparison, and I think it's also valid not to care so much about plausibility.

I'm not saying anything about plausibility. I'm saying that lots of weird crap happening for no reason is random to the point of not being scary. The circus in Gyo, for example? What the fuck was that?

There's literally nothing scarier than the unknown. Basic human psychology dude.

Define "the unknown".

Experiences or knowledge that do not fit in the conventional narrative of life, specially those that have inherent power over us and we can't do much to change them.

This is pretty basic, and oftentimes doesn't even have to relate to the supernatural. Fear of strangers, of flying, of the dark, all can boil down to the fact that they leave us powerless when confronted by them, and autonomy is pretty important to humans. And that's the thing: it varies from person to person. There are a couple that are arguably universal, but different sensibilities to 'the unknown' doesn't disprove it.

I had a 'divine punishment' theme. There was the sense that there was something out there watching and judging them, or at least the people felt that way. They were consumed by their guilt and fear and there was definitely some kind of supernatural force at work--let alone the fact that the holes were made to fit each person, how else would they still be alive after all those months and all the disfiguration? The caveman dream was just there to reinforce this. I don't think it was random at all; it played on the subconscious fears that most if not all people have (whether or not you believe in god, or if you think the supernatural force in the story was a god; I prefer to think of it as a manifestation of the peoples' guilt and fear). And like I said above, the fact that there are unanswered questions is what makes it an enigma. Personally I thought it tied together nicely and that's why I liked it, but naturally it's not for everyone. OP says horror doesn't appeal to them, so it makes sense that they didn't like a horror story.

Because now I can't stop overanalyzing it, for me the scariest moment is when they uncover the other side of the mountain and we see all the squiggly holes. That's when I just said "No." because, thanks to the caveman dream, I knew what was coming. So the actual ending wasn't the "AHHHH OH MY GOD!" moment, but it was still terrifying. All those people are gonna start crawling out of the holes, but nobody is going to recognize them as people. They'll be completely cut off from society and seen as monsters and who knows? Maybe they're still aware of it. And there's no reason for it except that some thing decided to toy with them (again, we don't know if it actually was punishing them, that might have just been their perception). It's a lot like I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, now that I think of it.

...I think that's all I have to say. I didn't mean to tl;dr this much, I am not even a huge fan, I just saw this on tumblr a couple weeks ago and I had fun picking it apart.

^ THIS! Imagining the pain of going through that, mercilessly shuffling forward without being able to do anything about it... ugh. Maybe it's my fear of losing control speaking, but I was on the verge of having a mental breakdown (not the screaming kind, rather a good cry in the nearest corner) when the last pages came up.

A grueson btw: I imagine that their bodies will break completely when they get out of those holes and the mountain can't support them anymore, and they will die in pain I gag to think about.

Ugh.

But there is a difference between random stuff and unexplainable stuff (that most of the time isn't even plausible).
The last one follow some rules but doesn't have a clear explanation and it has always been the base for Supernatural Horror.

Sometimes there's an explanation about the why (1) but almost never about the how (2).

1: i.e. The ghosts were angry because their grave was destroyed!
2: i.e: Sure, they were angry, but why did they come back while they were happy in the after life? Do they come back every now and there to check how everything is going? They have an alarm in case something they own, like their grave or their corpse, is destroyed? Or they were always ghosts that were there, but nobody noticed until they got really angry? Let's not even talk about what, exactly, is a ghost, etc.

Fuck, you're beyond saving.

It has nothing to do with LOL RANDUM xDDD. The unknown is a huge part of horror. People being drawn to horrible acts for no logical reason. Things don't work the way they usually should and that lack of reason and control can terrify people.
