Re: Why do people ship
(Anonymous) 2013-05-07 12:29 am (UTC)(link)I like romance, I just don't like the horrendous cookie cutter romance 95% of mainstream media tries to shove down my throat. in fandom, with shipping, there tends to be a wider variety of different types of romances so it is far easier for me to find romances that suit my tastes.
Also I like porn, but when it comes to written porn, I am pretty instant gratification. I don't first wanna read 50 chapters of some original fiction just to get to one sex scene, but at the same time, just reading original fiction porn is dull to me cause I don't have any emotional connection to the characters. With shippy porn, I can have both instant gratification through PWPs, but I still also have an emotional connection to the characters via the series already.
Lastly, shipping, for me, is also a way to further explore characters by exploring them through the relationships they have with others. Which is usually not something the canons I am interested in go much into. Most of the stuff I read/watch doesn't have canon ships, just hinted at stuff, but instead it focuses mostly on saving the world or this mystery or what not. So I look for shipping in fandom to get what I didn't get in canon. Canon already showed how my favourite character would react to X types of situations, but I didn't show how they would react to romance. So it is interesting to explore. (on the inverse, sometimes when I watch a canon with a character whose only definition is through the relationship they are in, in fandom I look for stuff that doesn't focus on said ship cause again, looking for the stuff I didn't get in canon)
