Why do people ship

(Anonymous) 2013-05-07 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, what is the point. They're not you. Why do you care about it except as a well-told or poorly-told part of the narrative that's just as significant as any other part of the narrative?

(not rhetorical - I obviously know there must be some reason shipping is popular, but I personally still don't understand what it is).

Because you can live out your fantasies through them?

Why do you watch shows or read books at all? They're not about you, why do you care?

the same reason i like seeing awesome battles even if i'm not fighting, friends bonding even though i'm not them, etc.

i am living vicariously through them even as a spectator and just for the moment

it is awesome

because it is fun? Why do you care about anything you care about? Cause it entertains you/fills a particular need you have.

I like romance, I just don't like the horrendous cookie cutter romance 95% of mainstream media tries to shove down my throat. in fandom, with shipping, there tends to be a wider variety of different types of romances so it is far easier for me to find romances that suit my tastes.

Also I like porn, but when it comes to written porn, I am pretty instant gratification. I don't first wanna read 50 chapters of some original fiction just to get to one sex scene, but at the same time, just reading original fiction porn is dull to me cause I don't have any emotional connection to the characters. With shippy porn, I can have both instant gratification through PWPs, but I still also have an emotional connection to the characters via the series already.

Lastly, shipping, for me, is also a way to further explore characters by exploring them through the relationships they have with others. Which is usually not something the canons I am interested in go much into. Most of the stuff I read/watch doesn't have canon ships, just hinted at stuff, but instead it focuses mostly on saving the world or this mystery or what not. So I look for shipping in fandom to get what I didn't get in canon. Canon already showed how my favourite character would react to X types of situations, but I didn't show how they would react to romance. So it is interesting to explore. (on the inverse, sometimes when I watch a canon with a character whose only definition is through the relationship they are in, in fandom I look for stuff that doesn't focus on said ship cause again, looking for the stuff I didn't get in canon)

Serious question for you, OP: Are you asexual?

Re: Why do people ship

Mainly because I like the characters and I enjoy reading romances. :) Movie-romances tend to be so awful, so my romance craving is almost never fulfilled by that sort of canon. Books don't have that problem, and I read mostly romance novels.

Because porn.

Why porn?

Well, if you have to ask, I second the "are you asexual" question.

In like manner, I know there must be some reason why some people don't ship, but I personally don't understand why that would be. I think it's one of those "if I have to explain, you wouldn't understand" type things on both sides.

The best answer would be some combination of all the comments above. The simplest answer is because it's fun. Some people find it fun for different reasons than others, but as far as I know everyone who ships does it because it entertains them in some way, whether it's sexual or non-sexual. Smut can be a reason why people ship, but it isn't the only one. (I know this because I actually am asexual, and I have a few ships but don't care to read smut about any of them. I just find relationships between characters interesting in general, whether they are romantic or platonic.)

Here's another way to look at it: When you were a child, did you have dolls? Did you sometimes put your dolls into couples romantically? It's like that, but you don't have to make up personalities for the dolls because someone else has already done it for you.

Why anything?

I enjoy it. I have fun writing/reading fic, or drawing/seeing art where my parings get together.

It doesn't matter that they aren't me, I'm not even interested in getting into a relationship. I'm not interested in traveling thousands of miles on foot with a bunch of people I just met, to throw some megalomaniacs tacky magic jewelery into a freaking volcano either. Does that make it weird that I like Lord of the Rings?

Because.

I can't speak for anyone else, but that is exactly a big part of the appeal in my case: they aren't me, but i like them and i want to see stories about them that don't happen in canon.

It's just really fun to explore and play around with those particular social elements, especially as big of a part as they play in most media, and as omnipresent as they are both in fiction and in real life.

Plus, often there's a lot more chemistry between characters who never get together than the ones who do. So there's almost always something to work with and expand on.

Since I also have a hard time being invested in traditional heteronormative relationships, it can also help me appreciate what's in canon by having a space to indulge in my preferences.
