I've had a few people at cons ask me where I got something I was wearing and every time it was something I had made. I told them that and I never thought that they might then feel bad about not knowing, or feeling like a "noob" I would never want that because I felt flattered that something I had made was awesome enough to be mistaken for factory made and be asked about.

So as far as that goes I don't think the person thought you were a noob or anything like that. And if they did, it just means that they're not that great of a person and you should take to heart what they think about you at all.

I was going to say this. I'd be super flattered if someone thought some shit I made was so good looking that they wanted to know where I got it (maybe so they could get one for themselves, too). :D Fandom or no, man, last time I went to Ohayocon I didn't know who half of anyone was. I recognized some Homestucks running around but I think at the time I was still calling it Homestruck so who even knows. :P

Fandom is supposed to be fun. If you're having fun? You're doin' fandom right. IMO!

This is an awesome comment and you should feel good about yourself. Also, great job making amazing stuff that gets mistaken fro factory made :)

This! I'm always super flattered when people assume I bought something that I made. I feel all professional and shit. :D

It could be a handmade coat that someone bought off of ebay or etsy or at a con, too. You never know!

Hey, awkward things like that happen to all of us. That doesn't even sound like such a bad mistake; like the above anon mentioned, a lot of people would be flattered by it. Don't beat yourself up over it.

No. You don't suck at fandom. You have a life and can't be bothered by remembering things of no importance. And that's the way I see it

I just can't keep track of all the subgenres.

THIS IS NOT A BAD THING

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'd be more worried if you could remember all the subgenres. Those are the people with nothing else going on in their lives.

Sounds like you're doing fandom just fine to me.

I love going to cons, I love cosplay, but honestly, I see a lot of stuff that I have no idea what it is, if it's a particular character or an OC or possibly just the way that person dresses because they are groovy like that or because this is a con and you can dress however you want. It's all good--and probably pretty flattering to be told that a coat you made looks like it was professional-quality clothing.

Sub-genres...I am fascinated by them, and that's probably the only reason why I know as many as I do. I don't READ most of them, but I think it's just...fandom and fanfic culture is just fascinating. Terrifying sometimes too. But it makes me wish I were a sociology student or something, because it's something I'd love to study.

Well, once my friends and I were asked if we were cosplaying a group for a particular manga none of us had heard of. Only we weren't.

You're not alone. I like dipping in and out and enjoying the stories and the art, but I don't often hang around. Mostly, I want to avoid the wank that happens (or inadvertently start any), but it also gets really hard to follow.

But, as said above, the point of fandom is to enjoy the book/movie/comic/whatever in a fan-based expanded format. If you like the stuff that's produced, then you've got fandom down pat!
