Really? It is the subject of every other prompt on the kink meme? And whenever I have seen Clint/Coulson as a background pairing, I have never had it be in your face. Hell, it is generally just sort of mentioned. Maybe you have terrible luck.

They're 'just mentioning' a pair that has zero interaction and the films so there's no precedent for it. It just being mentioned means that there's no buildup to it and we're just supposed to believe it somehow happened (which we don't see how because it's not the focus of the story). That can be pretty frustrating from the POV of the reader.

I think it originates from the one line in Thor and the whole "spare the pairs" mentality.

Hello, OP. I can tell by the number of comments you left on this post that you wrote the secret :)

Lol. I don't actually really read Marvel fic (outside some recs people have given me) and have certainly never visited the kink meme, so no. This also isn't something I'd really be secretive about it.

I was just bored and happened to find the thread near the beginning.

TBH, that is a thing that happens with a lot of other pairings as well. I mean, there's an awful lot of unexplained Tony/Steve or Natasha/Bruce or Natasha/Maria that pops up in the background, just for an example (I'd say "unexplained Tony/Bruce" but really, the movie did build that one pretty well). There's at least some interaction between most of those characters, but even so, it's abrupt to suddenly have a romance plopped down like of course it exists.

I've gotten to the point where I just roll with it unless the ship actively squicks me. Avengers is a crazy fandom.

It is kind of perplexing how it seems to be treated almost like a canon pairing.

Meh. Not any different from every other major pairing that isn't actually canon.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-07 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a little like Sam/Gabriel. It's really popular, there is like zero evidence for it, and people start throwing it in in the background because they feel it's expected.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-07 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand Clint/Coulson a lot better than Sam/Gabriel. Gabriel killed Dean, Sam's brother, how many (hundreds? I don't really remember) in front of him for months on end. Yeah, I can see a relationship developing out of that. Not.

The thing is, Clint/Coulson is actually a very awesome pairing, if you're into the super spies + co-workers thing. Where it comes from doesn't really matter when it results in truly great fic. :)

I'm into super spies and co-workers big time, but Clint/Coulson manages to hit on several of my squicks at the same time. I can't count the number of times I've backbuttoned in the middle of a story because it suddenly showed up, entirely unmotivated.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Sam/Gabriel didn't used to be a thing. I remember the two people on my flist who basically decided to make it a thing somewhere 'round about season 5-6. I remember thinking "this is too BS and craptastic to work", too. But sadly, I was wrong.

At any rater, it's totally manufactured and the people who got the ball rolling (at least, in my corner of SPN fandom) KNEW it was manufactured when they started out with it.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 09:29 am (UTC)(link)
The worst is when you start a Dean/Cas fic only to find that it that not only has Sam/Gabriel as a secondary pairing but also Adam/Michael...
