Really? It is the subject of every other prompt on the kink meme? And whenever I have seen Clint/Coulson as a background pairing, I have never had it be in your face. Hell, it is generally just sort of mentioned. Maybe you have terrible luck.

I never really understood it, nor do I really ship it, but Avengers, man. I just. . . Avengers. I ship almost everything & I know 99% of my ships make no sense.

But I get what you're saying. I'm a ship & let ship kind of person too. But some ships. . . ugh. Some ships bother me for whatever reason.

[personal profile] iggy 2013-05-07 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It really is one of the most blatant two-white-dudes MUST SHIP pairings I've seen. The characters have... one line of interaction (in which they're talking about Thor), and it's the second most popular ship in the fandom.

(That being said, I feel similarly about Loki/Tony, which is also on that list.)

I got into two big fandoms recently and found myself perplexed at the main ships in both. Avengers was one. I can see where Steve/Tony is coming from, though it doesn't interest me personally, but Clint/Coulson? What? Is it something from the comics?

I loled because I have the exact same reaction to Steve/Tony, and your screenshot just highlights how much "worse" that ship is in that regard. The amount of fic that has both C/C and S/T is ridiculous.

Thank God for Ao3's search engine.

Well, I ship Clint/Natasha like burning, and I get what you're saying. It's not so much that I dislike the ship as it's that lately every time a new Clint/Natasha fic gets posted, it turns out that it's really a Clint/Phil fic.

Really, I just want people to stop tagging Clint/anyone else fics with the Clint/Natasha tag.

[personal profile] intrigueing 2013-05-07 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no problem with the fact that they have almost no interaction -- I'm a big believer in extrapolating potential dynamics rather than having to stick to only what's depicted on screen.

However, I totally get how the treatment of the ship as basically canon and just randomly putting it into the background of non-C/C fics would be completely fucking irritating. Like, they just kinda throw it in there so blithely that it sometimes seems as though there was some canon scene that explicitly mentioned "Clint and Coulson are canon!" that I somehow missed.

This is how I feel about Steve/Tony

(Anonymous) 2013-05-07 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Fucking everywhere. If you go look at the kink meme's most recent pages, you'll see so many IM3 Spoiler tags with Steve/Tony as the fucking pairing in the header, and Steve wasn't even mentioned in the movie. Same for AUs. Same for surprise-pairings in gen fic. It makes me so mad.

I respond by writing Clint/Coulson. :)

(On the plus side, I at least tag my pairings, though.)

Funny, because I feel the exact same about Clint/Tasha. It's in the background of every other fucking fic and I HATE IT SO MUCH. At least in the movie verse, they're just good friends. We don't get enough male/female friendships and I like to enjoy them as just that, friendships. I don't care if people like to ship it, I just don't want to see them shipped in EVERY fic I read for other pairings.

Ha, I almost made a secret just like this a few months ago when I first started reading Avengers fic. I too am completely baffled by the pairing. At first I assumed Coulson and Clint had some massive chemistry in one of the Marvel movies that I haven't seen, but no, apparently there's just the one line of dialogue exchanged in Thor, yet people ship it all over the place and include it in the background of fic that isn't even about Clint or Coulson... IDEK.

I like this pairing but I kind of agree with this (yeah idk). They appeared out of fucking nowhere and they even are one of the big pairings! It's weird in a fandom as huge as The Avengers but at the same time it kind of makes sense?

1. They both don't have a lot of backstory (Clint Barton's probably been on screen no more than 20 minutes, between Thor and The Avengers), so fandom can create their own easily.
2. They both work together. Most important, they work together in a secret goverment agency. Probably as spies. You have 'that mission where they almost die and save each other' fic, 'that undercover mission where they are a married couple and acidentaly fall for each other' fic, Coulson's Clint superior (whether this is a fanon idea I don't know) so you have ALL the Dom/Sub you can get, all the origin stories (Coulson was the one who brought Clint into SHIELD, etc), and I could go on.
2.1. They work together as spies in a shady goverment agency. They have probably had to see each other naked and bruised, gone through who know what kind of traumas, built an insanely amount of trust for each other.
3. They have some little moments in the tie-in comic for the Avengers. They are really little (like, Clint is driving and Phil's sleeping in the passenger seat and Clint has a little smile on his face. I said little, right?), but then again, people has shipped a couple for a lot less (coughstonyinthemcucough)
4. Coulson said he had a cellist and apparently that's Clint because a cello and a bow are similar???? (tbh I don't get this one)

Besides (I might be wrong in this one but I don't think so lol), their fanfiction is pretty well written. I didn't even liked this pairing at first, but there's some fantastic fic about them out there, and I think that helps a lot. Between the fact that both characters don't have a lot of built ground, the authors can play all they want, and between all the bad fic with ooc in the Avengers fandom, the best ones I've read are Clint/Phil.

But, yeah. I agree with [personal profile] kaijinscendre too, probably you just have bad luck with fics. May I recommend you use the -"Clint Barton/Phil Coulson" tag on AO3 when searching fics in the Avengers fandom so they don't appear?

Surprise appearances by pairings you don't like are annoying.

Period.

And no, I don't give a shit which ones are "canon" or have "basis" in the comics. Keep your media separate, or at least tag that crap.

I do not GET that pairing at all. And it sucks because the pairing is so freakin' popular. I wish I could at least tolerate it so that I could read some of the fic, but nope. I tried and never got into a thing.

It's Kakashi/Iruka and Sirius/Remus all over again (though, to be fair, I at least understand where S/R comes from... can't say the same about the other two).

Haven't read much Avengers fic myself, but this seems to be a pattern in most shipping fandoms. When people write shipping fic that includes other characters, they want to pair those other characters up. Maybe the writer doesn't like het and would rather pair up two guys regardless of canon. This becomes a trend, and maybe people like the way the characters interact (or look) together, so they start writing/drawing about that pairing specifically and it becomes a part of fandom.

As with everything, everyone has a different opinion on them. Then, of course, you get those people who insist everything is right and canon.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm totally with you. Especially as when I first went looking for Natasha/Clint fic, it seemed like at least half the fics tagged Natasha/Clint were really Clint/Coulson with just a mention of Natasha/Clint as exes or whatever. (And another big portion of the fics had Steve/Tony paired up. I prefer Tony/Bruce or Tony/Pepper, and can't see Tony/Steve at all based on the movie, so I don't want to read those fics either.)

Actually, my favorite pairing (which is an odd one, I know) is Natasha/Bruce, but finding that (especially without Clint/Coulson or Steve/Tony has been even more difficult. Oh well.

And, yes, I agree that it is even more irritating because there is really no basis for it other than two white dudes who work together.

So, I basically dropped out of Avengers fandom. Which saddened me, as I was really excited about it when the movie first came out.

I don't get the pairing either. Coulson is obviously in love with Steve. Notice that his breakup with his girlfriend (who moved to another state to get away from him) happened around the same time Steve woke up. That's just too much of a coincidence. Why isn't Coulson/Steve more popular?

I can understand the feeling. I mean, I don't care what people ship and some crack ships are fine... but when a crack ship who has no interaction becomes the most popular ship... I get seriously confused.

Like, how the fuck is Bane/Blake the most popular pairing in TDKR? Or Barsad/Bane (I swear I didn't even know that guys name until I entered fandom). Is there some kind of novelization that capitalizes on this, because as far as I remember Bane and Blake never met and Barsad's name wasn't even mentioned in the movies.
