"I'm quite tired of getting all hopeful about a new fic . . . only to find out that they're some minor bg pairing."
Doesn't sem as though tjere's any way to please everyone, unless you focus on a very small "cast" for the story ... which in certain fandoms isn't realistic.

I tend to just say "fuck it!" and not really do anything about it. If readers are going to get up in arms about a pairings that's just being mentioned in the background and has little or no bearing on the story, then they probably don't even like the story itself so why bother pandering to them?
Personally, I tend to be irritated by people who assume that if a pairing is canon, you don't need to tag it. Like, people are allowed to dislike non-canon pairings but canon pairings are supposed to be universally liked? Don't get me wrong, I love most of the canon pairings (I love most pairings in general) but this attitude just irritates the hell out of me.

As for the last part, it seems the opposite to me in a lot of fandoms.

And really? I've seen a lot of fics that tag other background pairings but not if they're canon, or they're by authors who I know tag background/other stuff but not if it's canon. (But then, things like "Canon level violence" or "canon levels sexual assault" irritate me, too.)
