Social justice warriors on the internet has desensitized me to actual social justice problems.

Ironic, no?

Re: Non-Fandom Secrets

Agreed. I don't understand most of the complaints myself, so I kind of don't have the ability to distinguish real problems from internet squawking, except in very extreme cases. :(

I half think they're okay with that.

1. You're a Bad Person and Bad People Cannot Be Rehabilitated

2. If fandoms got less shitty they wouldn't get to yell about fandoms being shitty.

Makes sense to me. Always gotta have someone new to hate -- keeps 'em from turning on each other!

This happened to me, though not to a permanent extent. this one article on rape culture in one of those popular feminists websites used the term so much-- like, it only says "rape culture is X, rape culture is Y, repeated like a billion times and by the middle of it the word 'rape' had lost all meaning and didn't even sound like a word anymore. I really don't think that's what that article is supposed to do to the reader...

This, pretty much. I've always been the first to point out racist/sexist/homophobic/-ist bullshit, but now it's like I don't even want to bother unless it's really fucking extreme (or personally trigger-y). I'm not nearly as vocal about social justice issues as I used to be, and it's not even because I fear being labeled a SJW. I could give two shits about that. They just make every little thing into this huge fucking issue and I've gotten to the point where I'm just like "god, what the fuck ever".

More often than not I've even found myself siding with arguments I wouldn't have before because the SJWs just irritate me so fucking much. They blow everything out of proportion and make such a fucking mess of things and I always end up arguing with them just because I can't help myself.

that's because you're an awful person blaming "the SJWs" for your own indifference

you're welcome

Not only has SJWs desensitized me to sj issues so has reading all the angry rants by POC against white women and men. They do have their points and I'm not denying that they're true in their experience and, hell, I even agree w/them, but I'm now constantly wondering what POC think of me now even if it's just a simple hello, how are you doing exchange, esp. since I said that to a AA woman and she stared at me and walked away w/o a word at a conference I was attending. I have no idea what happened there other than she didn't like me b/c of my skin color.

I'm now much more uncomfortable around POC than ever before in my life when it totally didn't bother me sitting at a table being the only white woman w/everyone else being POC, primarily AA, in the 80s w/a large white student population (and I mean POC were primarily AA and vastly outnumbered) in a smallish southern town and my friends asked me why. Why? B/c I liked them and I thought they liked me. Now, I just wonder.

You know, I wouldn't actually wish it on anyone, not even white people, but...welcome to how I've felt when dealing with white people all of my life. It's always in the back of my mind what prejudices are triggered when they see my dark skin and kinky hair and casual clothes, and my concerns are proven correct sometimes (not always, but it happens) when they're visibly surprised when I open my mouth and use big words with a "white" accent, or tell a white doctor I have no kids and have never been pregnant, or anything else that clashes with their unconscious beliefs about black women.

They're rarely malicious about it, but racism doesn't have to be hateful to be troubling. It's just reality and I work around the discomfort. No race should have to, but I admit that I have trouble feeling sympathy for white people bemoaning the lost unawareness that I - and many other minorities - have never had.

welcome to how I've felt

I have trouble feeling sympathy

Huh? Well, I sympathize with both of you because I've felt the same way as you all my life. - different anon, white/mixed-race white-passing in a racially diverse city

Really. What kind of life are you living that there's no social justice issues that impact you, personally, at all? If you're in a position of privilege so profound that you are able to now feel little or nothing for the many variances of social fuckery most of us experience in some form, then I suspect you never had any particular sensitivity for such problems in the first place.

Re: Non-Fandom Secrets

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
There's a big difference between not being involved in internet slacktivism and not caring about issues. Frankly I could not give a shit what campaign someone's launching for a woman of color princess in a disney movie when I'd much rather worry about the socioeconomic conditions of my country and what causes them and how to improve them. Complaining about the lack of people of color in Brave isn't going to do shit in the long run.

AYRT

True, there is, but it's not a difference the OP specified. They said they're desensitized to "social justice problems", which would include such socioeconomic conditions as you mentioned because social justice has been a thing outside of the internet for a very long time. Your interpretation is more generous than mine, but both are about equal based on the little information provided.
