It's a wrong, dehumanizing way to think, even if it's not actively hurting anyone, and it's pretty natural not to want to spend a ton of time with, and be tarred with the same brush as, people who think that way?

Like, this is not a complicated one, folks.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it does suck being stuck in a fandom with assholes such as you who like to shit on other people's fun.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Because people's fun always trumps good taste and appropriate boundaries and real people's rights not to be objectified, amirite?

I'd rather be in this person's company than yours.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. There's plenty of fictional characters to choose from who have no actual feelings and won't give a rat's ass whether they're exploited or objectified or not. There's no excuse to go treating real people that way, especially on the open internet where that person (or their family, friends, kids, etc.) could stumble across it all too easily. And especially if they've signalled that they're not comfortable with it, or if it's leading to hateful or threatening behavior toward real people.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Agreeing here as well. There are plenty of fictional characters out there to ship and squee over, leave the real people alone.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep I gotta agree as well, it's creepy and unboundaried.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Count me in on this side too.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
+1,000 This. Especially when it involves violating people's privacy and threatening real people. It's so creepy to me that some fans don't see a problem with that as long as they're having "fun."

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it also dehumanizing to have sexual fantasies about celebrities? Because I don't see why daydreaming about having sex with Christian Bale is totally normal and healthy but daydreaming about Christian Bale having sex with Bryce Dallas Howard is sick and wrong. What's the difference?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's obviously a question of degrees but there's also clearly a point at which it goes from "daydreaming about sexual fantasies" to "obsessive interest in treating a person like a fictional character" and that's the point where it becomes dehumanizing, when you get to the point of tinhatting and when people think that their sexual fantasies have some relation to the reality of the person and think they know the reality of the person involved and follow the news about them relentlessly and even judge their actions and life through the lens of their RPS stuff.

I don't think that's a particularly difficult distinction to make.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't paint all RPF shippers with the same brush. The vast majority of us are well aware it's nothing more than a sexy fantasy. It's just that the aggressive ones get all the attention.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Fucking this. I don't get why this is so hard for rpf-haters to understand. I don't know any crazy tinhatters in my current fandom. I'm sure they exist, but I haven't encountered them and if I did I wouldn't associate with them, because EVERYONE thinks that shit is creepy. But people who think they're married to Loki on the astral plane are taking it too far too, creepy obsession in fandom isn't limited to people who like RPF.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
no their partners should not die in a fire to accomodate your ship and no, stealing personal pictures of celebrities is not okay.

Sounds to me like the OP is talking about the creepy ones. If you don't do this kind of thing, then don't take it personally.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Correct! I don't mind fic or art, but I do mind if they insist the actual two people MUST be in love and it seeps into real life, and feels stalker-ish.

NA

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for understanding the difference between the two groups.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
daydream about it all you want, but once you start writing fanfic and drawing fanart and making it a public spectacle? that's when it gets creepy. it's not like writing fic about fictional characters, those are real people and it's creepy and dehumanizing to treat them like dolls that you can make kiss for funsies.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
it's creepy and dehumanizing to treat them like dolls that you can make kiss for funsies.

This. Exactly.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope you feel just as bad about yourself if you ever stop and think, "Hey So-and-so is hot, I'd love to tap that." or "Hey, best-friend and other-friend would be such a cute couple, we should set them up!"

At least the majority of RPS fans are well aware that the 'shipping' they're doing is about the personas of said famous people, and that it's just all in good fun.

Not to say there aren't some batshit crazy fans, but those exist in any part of fandom, not just RPS.

There's a huge difference between thinking two of your friends would be hot together and making a website to celebrate this, putting photomanips of your friends together and writing stories about your two friends fucking. If I did that, I'd be pretty ashamed of myself, and if I found out one of my friends was doing that about me, they wouldn 't be my friend, they'd be the newest recipient of a shiny restraining order.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly right

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a difference between fantasizing about it or making a comment in passing, and writing elaborate pornographic stories for public consumption. At some point you're crossing a line, and we can legitimately debate as to exactly where that line should fall, but "better safe than sorry" is always better policy when talking about showing respect for others than "YOLO."
