I will never understand people's problems with RPS. Let people think what they want. If it's not hurting anybody why are you ashamed to share a fandom with them just because of their delusions?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a wrong, dehumanizing way to think, even if it's not actively hurting anyone, and it's pretty natural not to want to spend a ton of time with, and be tarred with the same brush as, people who think that way?

Like, this is not a complicated one, folks.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it does suck being stuck in a fandom with assholes such as you who like to shit on other people's fun.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Because people's fun always trumps good taste and appropriate boundaries and real people's rights not to be objectified, amirite?

I'd rather be in this person's company than yours.

Is it also dehumanizing to have sexual fantasies about celebrities? Because I don't see why daydreaming about having sex with Christian Bale is totally normal and healthy but daydreaming about Christian Bale having sex with Bryce Dallas Howard is sick and wrong. What's the difference?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's obviously a question of degrees but there's also clearly a point at which it goes from "daydreaming about sexual fantasies" to "obsessive interest in treating a person like a fictional character" and that's the point where it becomes dehumanizing, when you get to the point of tinhatting and when people think that their sexual fantasies have some relation to the reality of the person and think they know the reality of the person involved and follow the news about them relentlessly and even judge their actions and life through the lens of their RPS stuff.

I don't think that's a particularly difficult distinction to make.

daydream about it all you want, but once you start writing fanfic and drawing fanart and making it a public spectacle? that's when it gets creepy. it's not like writing fic about fictional characters, those are real people and it's creepy and dehumanizing to treat them like dolls that you can make kiss for funsies.

I hope you feel just as bad about yourself if you ever stop and think, "Hey So-and-so is hot, I'd love to tap that." or "Hey, best-friend and other-friend would be such a cute couple, we should set them up!"

At least the majority of RPS fans are well aware that the 'shipping' they're doing is about the personas of said famous people, and that it's just all in good fun.

Not to say there aren't some batshit crazy fans, but those exist in any part of fandom, not just RPS.

There's a huge difference between thinking two of your friends would be hot together and making a website to celebrate this, putting photomanips of your friends together and writing stories about your two friends fucking. If I did that, I'd be pretty ashamed of myself, and if I found out one of my friends was doing that about me, they wouldn 't be my friend, they'd be the newest recipient of a shiny restraining order.

There's a difference between fantasizing about it or making a comment in passing, and writing elaborate pornographic stories for public consumption. At some point you're crossing a line, and we can legitimately debate as to exactly where that line should fall, but "better safe than sorry" is always better policy when talking about showing respect for others than "YOLO."

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It hurst people when it gets brought up to the stars IRL, or when stars get harassed on Twitter or elsewhere to confirm ridiculous stuff (see Beaver, Jim) or when the real SOs are harassed or attacked in public forums.

I'm an occasional RP shipper *cough* when the show/movie characters just would not fit with the AU *cough* and I could strangle the fans who act like that and/or bring up fanfictions with the actors!

Same goes for fics about the show character: the very last thing I want is the actors to know about them.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I think things like twitter, instagram, facebook, etc are blurring the 4th wall just a little. Like, the people who send messages to an actor's parent or sibling or college friends regarding the 'ship.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Let people think what they want? Even though their delusions are interfering with both their lives and daily functioning, AND the lives and daily functioning of the objects of their delusions?

Because, in this case, letting people think what they want is on a par with letting a paranoid schizophrenic think what they want. The fact that the majority of these people are also usually children (teenagers are still children, and if you don't believe that, it's because you still are one), just makes the whole situation several orders of magnitude worse.

My boyfriend was playing football for many years. He wasn't famous but his team was known. One day I stumbled over fanfic about him (in our language) and couldn't resist to read because I didn't even know there was a fandom for him.

The author knew so much about him it was scary.
Personal things, stuff about me.
Oh, and also the fic had me die horribly in the end so my boyfriend could be happy with the author's self-insert.
It felt like shit. I was scared.

You just don't put something like that online. Write it for yourself but don't out it somewhere where people involved can find it.

Oh god, that's scary as hell. I'm so sorry you had to experience that. x_x

Yikes, that sounds really awful.

[personal profile] wauwy 2013-05-09 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Fucking exactly. Lock that shit behind every password and disclaimer in your possession. Make it close to impossible for anyone involved to find it.

Because you know what, fictional and dead people can't Google themselves, but real people (and their immediate families) can. And fanfiction is a level of invasive personal creepy nine million times worse than hateful youtube comments or whatever.

I have no idea what that must have been like for you, geez.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's highly disrespectful to the actors/real people.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
When it gets uncomfortably stalkerish (seeking out private photos, sending smut to the people who are in it, wishing death on their spouses, sending hate mail to their spouses, etc), that crosses the line and is no longer not hurting anybody.

I don't have a problem overall with RPS, because most RPS fans I've met know the difference between fantasy and reality and make an effort to not let things get creepy and to let the actual people live their lives, but they're not the kind of people the secret is talking about.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
This is my stance on it. RPS as a self-contained fandom is one thing (not my generally my thing, but I'm very ship-and-let-ship), but when it starts crossing boundaries, it stops being okay.

There are sane RPS shippers out there - they're the ones that don't openly identify as such because they know that most people only know about the batshit ones, and who in their right mind would want to be associated with that?
wauwy: (Default)

[personal profile] wauwy 2013-05-09 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's obnoxious and embarrassing, and I'm tired of being shame-shamed. Being embarrassed to be associated with your appalling beliefs and behavior is my right, and I won't be intimidated into giving it up.
