I will never understand people's problems with RPS. Let people think what they want. If it's not hurting anybody why are you ashamed to share a fandom with them just because of their delusions?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a wrong, dehumanizing way to think, even if it's not actively hurting anyone, and it's pretty natural not to want to spend a ton of time with, and be tarred with the same brush as, people who think that way?

Like, this is not a complicated one, folks.

It hurst people when it gets brought up to the stars IRL, or when stars get harassed on Twitter or elsewhere to confirm ridiculous stuff (see Beaver, Jim) or when the real SOs are harassed or attacked in public forums.

I think things like twitter, instagram, facebook, etc are blurring the 4th wall just a little. Like, the people who send messages to an actor's parent or sibling or college friends regarding the 'ship.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Let people think what they want? Even though their delusions are interfering with both their lives and daily functioning, AND the lives and daily functioning of the objects of their delusions?

Because, in this case, letting people think what they want is on a par with letting a paranoid schizophrenic think what they want. The fact that the majority of these people are also usually children (teenagers are still children, and if you don't believe that, it's because you still are one), just makes the whole situation several orders of magnitude worse.

My boyfriend was playing football for many years. He wasn't famous but his team was known. One day I stumbled over fanfic about him (in our language) and couldn't resist to read because I didn't even know there was a fandom for him.

The author knew so much about him it was scary.
Personal things, stuff about me.
Oh, and also the fic had me die horribly in the end so my boyfriend could be happy with the author's self-insert.
It felt like shit. I was scared.

You just don't put something like that online. Write it for yourself but don't out it somewhere where people involved can find it.

I think it's highly disrespectful to the actors/real people.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
When it gets uncomfortably stalkerish (seeking out private photos, sending smut to the people who are in it, wishing death on their spouses, sending hate mail to their spouses, etc), that crosses the line and is no longer not hurting anybody.

I don't have a problem overall with RPS, because most RPS fans I've met know the difference between fantasy and reality and make an effort to not let things get creepy and to let the actual people live their lives, but they're not the kind of people the secret is talking about.

You're talking about One Direction fandom, aren't you? Because I feel you on that one. Yeesh, the tinhattery.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, how did you guess?

Also, to a lesser extent CrissColfer shippers and the Supernatural fandom.

I'm not even IN the One Direction Fandom (though I think their music is okay) but it shows up on my dash from people that I share other fandoms with.

I know how you feel.

I don't necessarily think that everyone in RPS fandom blurs the fantasy vs. reality boundaries, but it really does verge on being that way for me. It's one thing to fantasize, but it's entirely another to take real, living people and use them the same way you would fictional characters.

Especially when the more invested fans do end up crossing the wires between their investment in celebrities as celebrities, and their obsession with the fictional personas they build through fandom.

There's a lot of people who definitely are sane about RPF in general, and I understand it's partly an extension of this talboidesque cultural voyeurism that's been ingrained into society, but it doesn't take much at all to nudge it over into "creepy as fuck" territory at all.

...since when are harassment and invasion of privacy not harmful?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-05-08 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really have much problem with RPF on its own. I don't like it, but I try not to shit on other people's fun so YKINMK and all that. For the most part, it doesn't harm anyone.

I do, however, have a problem with some of the attitudes that some RPF circles seem to encourage. Stealing private pictures and stalking, those ARE all harmful - they are invasive and humiliating and the fact that so many people in RPF think this is an OKAY thing to do is why so many of us who don't have a problem with RPF itself stay the fuck away from that part of fandom, anyway.

Yes, I'm well aware not all RPFers are like this, and in some fandoms even MOST aren't like this. But enough of them are like this that I do my best not to touch it with a ten foot pole. Keep your privacy-invading-harassment-encouraging-and-stalking-enabling fandom away from me.

No, celebrities don't "sign up for stalking" just because they're famous. You know what they sign up to do? Their jobs. They sign up to act, or play a part, or sing something or play something or whatever their job description entails. They do not sign up to be stalked or harassed, they do not sign up to have their social networking accounts broken into, and they do not sign up their friends and family to be receiving such invasive treatment.

"No their partners should not die in a fire to accommodate your ship."

Are the people arguing fantasy vs reality miss this line? There are RPS who are extremely delusional and think the people that they ship are actually in love with each other in real life, are pretending to be straight, their wives are beards and these delusional shippers want their wives to die for no other reason because they are in the way of Tru Love. I've seen some wish that the wives would miscarry their babies because of how dare they oopsed their husbands.

I don't have a problem with thinking Hey these two are cute and awesome together and wish they are in love with each other in real life but the ones that think their fantasy is an actually reality and send twitter and vicious hate mail to their wives and wish death upon them? No, just the fuck no. Get thee to a therapist because those folk need it.

and yes Supernatural J2 tinhatters is what I'm mainly talking about.

Holy giant wall of text, Batman!

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2013-05-08 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
When I was younger, I would write about domestic bliss with my schoolgirl crushes in little notebooks that I'd never bring to school because I was afraid they'd read it, but I would share them with close friends who also had crushes on some of them (and likewise they'd write things like what their house would look like). We never broke into their house to steal pictures. We never insulted their significant others. We knew the difference between reality and fantasy (it was sort of our way of making sure we wouldn't do anything stupid, and in fact sometimes through writing it we'd realize how stupid our crushes were and we'd get over them). I'm pretty sure this was harmless.

See, with celebrities, there are entire communities that crush on them. As long as nobody is being creepy about it (I mean, the stealing pictures and the death threats to the celebrity's actual partner makes me really uncomfortable), then who cares? If you're egoistical enough to google yourself, there are going to be things that make you uncomfortable and RPF is only going to be a small part of that.

Also, blacklist tags and scroll past things that bother you. It's really not rocket science.

Teal deer says, "as long as no one's being obsessive or creepy, scroll by and let write."

RPS is only a problem when people let it bleed into their actual interactions with celebs or how they feel about said celebs. otherwise, who the fuck cares.

some celebs even encourage RPS or at least know and don't care. so what about that snarky pants.

Holy shit, people actually do this? That's seriously creepy.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
OK, I'm sorting this shit out. now:

People who are against RPF: Learn to live and let fucking live. People, by and large, only ever seek to add a little happiness into their own lives by whatever means they can. Let them get on with it. They are not taking anything from you, or the people they write about, and really, is pissing on other peoples fun really how you want to find your slice of happiness? Cant you think of anything better?

People who are for RPF: Not everyone will like you or your hobbies and interests. Get over it. People on the internet are finding their own slice of happiness by saying mean things about you and your choices? Let it slide. What harm can they really do you? Also, you should tag your stuff if you want to avoid rubbing people the wrong way.

Now could we all just stop being twats to each other?

Tumblr savior helps but only if they tag it.

I have no problem with RPF as long as people can keep from trying to making it reality, when they start pulling that insane crap and harassing SO's and such it is just sickening, so I can seriously understand coming to hate and be disgusted by it if you get exposed to a lot of those people. Especially the CrissColfer and One Direction people are extraordinarily bad lately.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
I’ve written and read both real person fic and fictional person fic, but the people who don’t know the difference between real-life and fantasy, the ones that don’t seem to understand boundaries are very creepy. Even creepier are the people who understand the lines but cross them anyway, for fun or for profit (like, oh, say, tabloids).

It doesn’t matter whether you are in a real person fandom or a fictional person fandom, if you are harassing, stalking, or stealing things from anyone in your pursuit of this fandom, you are completely in the wrong.

[personal profile] seventh_seal 2013-05-09 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I read RPF myself and feel OK with that (authors can use only the public personas of the people, not the real real people) but I wish everyone realized it's just a fantasy and stopped cyber-stalking celebs for the non-existent proof and dissing their actual partners. Coming across that sort of thing makes me embarrassed for liking the fic.
