...since when are harassment and invasion of privacy not harmful?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-05-08 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really have much problem with RPF on its own. I don't like it, but I try not to shit on other people's fun so YKINMK and all that. For the most part, it doesn't harm anyone.

I do, however, have a problem with some of the attitudes that some RPF circles seem to encourage. Stealing private pictures and stalking, those ARE all harmful - they are invasive and humiliating and the fact that so many people in RPF think this is an OKAY thing to do is why so many of us who don't have a problem with RPF itself stay the fuck away from that part of fandom, anyway.

Yes, I'm well aware not all RPFers are like this, and in some fandoms even MOST aren't like this. But enough of them are like this that I do my best not to touch it with a ten foot pole. Keep your privacy-invading-harassment-encouraging-and-stalking-enabling fandom away from me.

No, celebrities don't "sign up for stalking" just because they're famous. You know what they sign up to do? Their jobs. They sign up to act, or play a part, or sing something or play something or whatever their job description entails. They do not sign up to be stalked or harassed, they do not sign up to have their social networking accounts broken into, and they do not sign up their friends and family to be receiving such invasive treatment.

EXACTLY THIS! Real-person FANTASY is fine. Real-person CREEPERING (did I just invent a new word or am I just repeating something I heard?) is not!

*applauds*

And I write the occasional RPF. There, I admitted it. It's in a locked comm, carefully kept away from the real people, and I respect their boundaries. It's a fantasy, and the kind to keep quiet except in certain safe areas. Though, to be honest, they sort of encourage it with their comments about each other; it's still not something to actually believe or flash around on tumblr or whatever, IMO.

"They do not sign up to be stalked or harassed..."

Maybe it's just early, and probably depends on the community too, but I'm surprised someone hasn't popped in to say they should expect it though. Because that justifies jerkery on the internet or something.

Oh. I forgot to switch back to my regular account for that comment...

Guess I can't delete and switch now oh well.

+1

My main fandom is an RPS fandom. We keep it under lock and key, leave the real life families out of the fic, and respect the very real people that are fandom is based on. Anyone who doesn't do that gets kicked out.

What about all the non-RPFers who bring up fandom to actors and creators over and over and over again at cons, during interviews, at premieres? I wish fandom could stop acting like this is something only people in RPF fandoms do. Unfortunately, people who don't understand boundaries exist in every fandom, fictional or not.

Oh I hate that so much... They ask their questions about shipping and fics, and when the actor/creator replies with politely and with a joke or something innocent (but could be taken the wrong way) slips out, fandom goes mad making assumptions.

I'm so glad nothing like that got asked at the event I was at, I would have died with embarrassment for the actor and the person asking.

This. I don't RPF ship at all but man the loud obnoxious shippers who like to bring up topics to actors that they really shouldn't exist in all fandoms, it's embarrassing and cringe worthy no matter who's doing it.

Asking people if Castiel is canon or not is horribly embarrassing; asking if them if they fuck their co-worker/long time friends and obsessively collecting "proof" is a completely different tier of abhorrent, invasive behavior that turns a real actor's life into their fictional playground.

Similar, but not the same.

This. Sending actors stuff about your ship is still extremely creepy and awkward and embarrassing, but ultimately it's asking them about fictional characters that they can put on and take off at will. It's definitely creepy, yeah, but not on the same level as trying to get extremely personal details about their actual private lives.

SO MUCH WORD to your last paragraph.

I really hate when people excuse crappy treatment of celebrities by saying "Well they shouldn't have become celebrities if they didn't want to get mistreated!!"

THIS Ok. yeS.

I'm a RPF. Most of what I write is RPF, but goodness people, it's a FANTASY. Anyone who even jokes about stealing people's pictures is wrong, and it's creepy and I wish they weren't part of the fandom.
