Secret maker here: It's sort of too late. I was actually well into the series before I even found out the books were such a big thing. And I didn't really get into shipping later down the line still.

Anyway, it's series 3 by now, and I'm a really slow, difficult reader. I actually tried reading the first one and gave up a few chapters down the line.
Even if I'd pick it up again, I can managr maybe one "easy" book a month, by which I mean like a 150-200 page detective novel. The Asoif books are like 3-4 times that size, and twice and really dense in information. In a best case scenario, I'd need 3-4 months to struggle through one of them, and adding to that I'm doing a course where I'll have 6 mandatory books to read before the year is through.

In short, there's simply no way I'd manage to be "up to speed" even before season 4 - let alone now.

I also just think it's one of those things where I simply might njoy the adaptation more.

hm what about audiobooks?

either way i think sticking to the HBO adaptation is fine

The books are frankly a lot better, though. As someone else said, try the audiobooks? I've heard they're not bad.

Or just say "fuck spoilers", read spoilers, and throw yourself into the fandom. The show is changing so much from the books anyway that it will still surprise you.
