Re: AU Scenarios You Love
Also scenarios where, for whatever reason, everyone in the cast is alive and must interact semi-politely with each other, usually under the authority of a third party. It's got so much potential for hilarity and character development.
Sci-fi AUs where at least one person is an AI, especially if the fic deals with the implication of that.
Superhero AUs.
Fusions that cross over with the Temeraire world, the Dishonored world, MLP, Portal, and too many other things to list.
"Real world" AUs where the characters still have their powers but must deal with them in relation to our "non-fictional" world - like that Red Dwarf episode "Back to Earth" or whatever it was called.
There's probably more. AUs are so much fun to play with.

How come?

Re: AU Scenarios You Love
Yeah, there's something intoxicating about the idea of "They fight crime!" There are many, many awful TV shows which attest to this.
I especially like AUs where it's a believable progression, though. Not just randomly, "Tiana and co. have magic powers! They fight crime!" but more like, "Low-chaos Corvo gets bored and turns into dieselpunk Batman!" which I think I would pay to read and may end up writing.

I like this. A lot.
