I noticed today that every long Hollywood AU I have read in my fandoms (I have read 5-6) has been awesome. I don't know why. Maybe because the writer has to be able to write a story within a story or just BECAUSE of the story within a story.

So Hollywood AUs are my weakness, what is yours?

modern day AUs for historical stuff
lesbian AUs for every straight romance
Pokemon AUs for everything

I really like Teacher AUs, and I'm also a fan of Police AUs. :) They tend to be fairly common, and they scratch that itch (most of them aren't particularly well-written, but they are fun.)

Modern day AU, High School AU, and that's all I can think of right now.

I recently managed to procure out of failfandomanon an Asterix ww2 resistance AU. Shit was cool yo.

An Asterix WW2 resistance AU? I'm curious. What was the basic plot?

Royalty AUs. (Especially if it's fantasy royalty AUs and there's like a court mage or w/e. I am all over that.)

"what if..." rewrites of canon material that really delve into the fabric of the story, or a relationship, or whathaveyou

modern day au's and period au's, especially if a fantasy setting ends up being translated into "normal" society while keeping it's fantasy elements

fantasy/fairy tale style au's

Space!!! AU's

Coffee shop/Grocery store type AU because they're really cool when done right or are funny

I love WWII AUs.

And really any AUs set in a different time period (historical if it's a modern fandom, modern if it's historical), but WWII AUs are my crack.

D/s AUs, even though I know they can be sketchy as hell and the implications are kind of on the same level as the A/B/O thing.

Also scenarios where, for whatever reason, everyone in the cast is alive and must interact semi-politely with each other, usually under the authority of a third party. It's got so much potential for hilarity and character development.

Sci-fi AUs where at least one person is an AI, especially if the fic deals with the implication of that.

Superhero AUs.

Fusions that cross over with the Temeraire world, the Dishonored world, MLP, Portal, and too many other things to list.

"Real world" AUs where the characters still have their powers but must deal with them in relation to our "non-fictional" world - like that Red Dwarf episode "Back to Earth" or whatever it was called.

There's probably more. AUs are so much fun to play with.

Superhero AUs are my kryptonite.

Slavery AUs. Which I tend to find on kink memes, but it's a bit of a shame, because I'm not actually in it for the kink (I don't even read porn, really) - I just like angst and h/c and for some reason, my favorites being enslaved is my preferred flavor of angst. It's a bit rare to find slave-fic of the sort that I prefer, but it's totally worth the search when it exists.

I also like fandom/plot specific AUs - the "what if" sort of fics, you know, changing one thing about canon and seeing how it affects everything else, or reversing characters' positions.

I love reading all kinds of AUs. My favorites to write are fantasy/modern fantasy with lots of world building. The kind where honestly I could probably change the names and have an ok "original story" but I just have so much more fun with fanfic.

I love hs!AUs, role reversal!AUs, fusion!AUs, medieval/royalty!AUs... I like a lot.
Which reminds me, I wanted to check out pirate!AUs today because a fanartist was talking about them!

AUs which alter some fundamental aspect of human society and then go on to really follow through on the ramifications.

I just devoured a piece of hockey RPF the other night because it did a good job exploring psychic bonding. I have no clue who the people I was reading about even are, and I totally didn't care.

a/b/o universe.. I ain't even sorry. And similarly, master/slave AUs. Even though those two have an astounding number of horrible fics in them no matter what fandom you're in, idec. I love it.

Stories within stories are cool!

I like AUs that deal with time travel or reality hopping. Basically I just like characters talking to slightly different versions of themselves.

Bakery Aus; coffeehouse au's are ok; restaurant aus; future aus (ex. Merlin set in today instead of the show's setting); detective aus; huh,I'm probably forgetting some. I think I just like aus. :P

oooooohh, serial killer aus; esp. w/the the characters being serial killers (I just read a really long, good one that made me more interested in the genre) although the ones where they're tracking serial killers are good too.

Pirate AUs! Swashbuckling adventures on the high seas are where it's at. Hells yes.

I like pirates and academia AUs. Also, I've never been able to find one for any of my fandoms, but I'd kill to see a good equestrian AU.

High school AUs :U I'm almost 25 and I don't care, I love the cheesy awkwardness of well-done hs!AUs. Reading about my favorite characters being stupidly adorable teenagers is...stupidly adorable.

Really I love any kind of AU - anything that explores the characters in different settings is pure gold to me. Unfortunately, most fic I find only really explores the smut, so I have to write anything I want to see. (I mean, I like smut, don't get me wrong, but the point of an AU - at least IMO - is to delve into a new perspective!)

Criminal AU. Good guys being bad and bad guys being good.
Fusion AU. The more different between the two series the better.

Most of my fandoms are fantasy/sci fi, so... modern AUs. Especially university and coffee shop, for some reason. Also, like nursejoy said, Pokemon AUs.

My brain keeps trying to convince me to write a Defiance!verse AU for Legend of Zelda, though, and I keep telling it that that's a really bad idea but it won't listen, send help...
