Meh, my headcanon is that it's actually set in Provençal and they're speaking langue d'oc, which is why Lumiere and Babette have 'French' accents (native langue d'oil speakers!). ... and that this all actually happened really close to the border, which is why the Beast can be a Prince because he's actually a ruler of a very small principality that everyone forgot about because it didn't matter to them politically.

... I thought way too much about this.

Oh my god, I had actually made that same association before because I have massive accent-annoyance, like the OP.

Will you marry me?

Oh, this is interesting. Plus, in the French dub, Lumiere has an accent, with a slight trill on the r's. Something that is mostly done in the South now, particularly among older people, but it was a very "Parisian" thing to do.

Careful though, Provençal is the name of the language, Provence of the region! Provençal wasn't the only language spoken in the langue d'oc area, however, closer to the border it would be something closer to occitan, maybe? Unless the small principality was located up north the langue d'oc region and near the Italian border, in which case, it would certainly have been a language close to Provençal.

... thinking too much about this: now that makes two of us... /scuttles out in embarrassment
