Did you even read the secret? They're complaining about American movies where only a few characters have non-American accents, not about American accents. They explicitly said that they'd rather have everyone have American accents instead of having just a few characters having non-American accents. How'd you get "American accents suck" out of that?

That wasn't the point of the secret. The point was if the movie is set in a foreign country, why is only one or two characters the ones with any accents? The rest sound like they are from California.

It's an odd thing that bugs the OP.

And, yeah, it kind of makes no sense to me too. Like why bother if none of the other cast is going to play along? And Disney is guilty of doing this multiple times.

Not as annoying as the "convenient switching of languages". When two people who speak the same tongue and are shown to speak it with each other or their countrymen switch to English just because.

Do you want the honest answer?

Accents make dialogue hard to understand. So, major characters will almost never have accents unless there are plot reasons.

Minor characters have accents thrown in there for "authenticity," or so it seems.

I seem to recall watching Love, Actually, and the first thing that one dude did when he got to Milwaukee was go to "any old American bar" and pick up busty chicks that I seem to recall had Southern accents and wore cowboy hats. Milwaukee is in Winsconsin, which is better known for being a boring-ass collection of cheese heads (I kid, Winsconsinites ;P). It wouldn't be unusual for somebody from down South to be up there, but...yeah. That's another thing. I'm from Texas, and I do not speak like Dubya. Yet every time anyone in foreign movies is from America, they're either from Texas or California or New York, and if they're from Texas, they have the stereotypical accent of that region. Point being? Laziness and stereotypes exist in everybody's media.

If it's a movie made by Americans for an American audience, of course they're going to make it more accessible to their primary audience. And I'd rather listen to no accent at all than a badly done one, personally.

Don't try it guys. Please.

As a member of a nation whose accent is often "imitated" I'd rather they just didn't try. Either get actors of the right nationality or just invoke translation convention and move on. Whenever they get someone to try and do the accent they either wander all over the country hitting on a dozen accents, or they do the all purpose alleged-comedy version which is even worse.

Worse than all that, when fanfic roles around, the fucking ficcers always do an insulting alleged phonetic version. Like it is any less racist than a "phonetic" oriental accent with the flied lice, or the messa massa supposed Jamaican accent.

I've been around a decent number of people with French accents in my life and even speak a little of it myself and I *still* have trouble understanding what they're saying sometimes. I know someone who needs to put subtitles on movies with Antonio Banderas in them because they can't understand a word he says through his accent. Some people just have trouble understanding certain accents or accents in general.

I'm sure the people producing kids movies are extra aware of that because non-bilingual children will probably have the same problem (especially if they're still young enough that they're still learning to speak English properly) and thus won't watch the movie, and they want the widest appeal possible to make as much money as possible. Unfortunately most people in America only speak English and are stupidly stubborn/proud about it, so you get people in France/Russia/Saudi Arabia/ect with American accents in cartoons. In this case I enjoy the one or two accented characters because it introduces you to the unfamiliar accent of the area the movie is about, but doesn't swamp you with it.

I agree the stereotypes are awful. Lumiere could have just been a guy/candlestick with a French accent rather than a FRENCH guy/candlestick.

Well, on one hand accents do muck up the English language quite a bit for the casual listener. On the other, it does beg the question of how much does linguistic authenticity matter in relation to the movie's setting and plot.

In animated works it's not just accents, it's the way people look: the beautiful main pairing are usually the only ones who don't look like caricatures of human beings.

It's been a while since I saw Beauty and the Beast, but didn't Lumiere have an overdone fakey French accent and Cogsworth have an approximately British accent, and everything else American?

What do the accents matter if they wouldn't be speaking English anyway? I honestly just wish we would stop doing the British Accents = Every Foreign Language thing.

Ah, I have a related secret.
I find it so odd when in Disney movies some character names are just a word in the language of the country the movie takes place in.
I understand "Belle" in Beauty and the Beast, that's an actual name and therefore clever. But "LeFou"? Really? This man is literally named "the nutty guy". Kind of unoriginal. Why not name Gaston "Monsieur Musclé" while we're at it ;)

Just like in the Lion King where the main character is simply named "lion".
Good job, parents. Good job ;)

Eh, it's just something that happens, and not only in American films (you need to get out more, anon). I mean, if there's a "Canadian" character they'll often have some ridiculous cross between hoser/Newfie that no one in the entire country actually sounds like even though a huge number of Hollywood stars are Canadian because they, well, sound almost exactly like Americans.

You know Trailer Park Boys isn't a documentary, eh?

Yet, if we want to talk offensive stereotypes and ridiculous accents, the US doesn't have a goddamn thing on Japan.

Meh, my headcanon is that it's actually set in Provençal and they're speaking langue d'oc, which is why Lumiere and Babette have 'French' accents (native langue d'oil speakers!). ... and that this all actually happened really close to the border, which is why the Beast can be a Prince because he's actually a ruler of a very small principality that everyone forgot about because it didn't matter to them politically.

This only bugs me if the movie isn't that good, or if characters with different accents are in focus for most of the movie, like HTTYD.

This has always bothered me because not only is it offensive, but it makes no sense in the context of the film. I think it's just a lazy attempt to make a side character seem more interesting, memorable or comical to children.

The other thing that bothers me: If you have a movie where people speak their native language, they shouldn't have "foreign" accents at all. This baffles me every time I see it. Why do it? Do people assume that audiences can't actually remember the country a movie takes place?
